Remembering Muhammed Faris: An Obituary for a Space Pioneer

Muhammed Faris, a prominent figure in space exploration and the first cosmonaut from Syria, passed away at the age of 72. His death on April 19 marked the end of a remarkable journey that began decades ago.

A Journey to the Stars

Faris made history in 1987 when he became the first Syrian to travel into outer space as part of the Soviet Union’s Interkosmos program. On July 22, 1987, he embarked on his one and only spaceflight aboard Soyuz TM-3, alongside fellow cosmonauts Aleksandr Viktorenko and Aleksandr Aleksandrov. This mission not only made Faris the 12th foreign national to fly on a Russian spaceflight but also the first to visit the iconic space station, Mir.

During his week-long stay aboard Mir, Faris conducted various experiments, including observing Syria from space and participating in scientific studies. His dedication to representing his country was evident when he broadcasted live from orbit, expressing his love and respect for his homeland.

In a groundbreaking moment, Faris carried a vial of soil from Damascus into space, symbolizing his deep connection to his roots. This act showcased his pride in his heritage and his desire to share this experience with the world.

A Legacy of Courage and Resilience

Following his return to Earth on July 30, 1987, Faris logged a total of 7 days, 23 hours, and 4 minutes in space, solidifying his place in history as the 209th person to journey beyond our planet. He was celebrated as a Hero of the Soviet Union and received the prestigious Order of Lenin for his contributions to the Interkosmos program.
