Coinbase’s Stand for Crypto PAC Shapes Crypto Regulation Through Electoral Process

Coinbase’s non-profit organization, “Stand for Crypto,” has recently launched a political action committee (PAC) with the aim of influencing crypto regulation during the upcoming 2024 electoral process.

The launch of this PAC was announced by Stand With Crypto on social media on May 10. The PAC will allow its approximately 450,000 members to financially support US Senate and House candidates who advocate for progressive digital asset policies.

With the election day just six months away, the involvement of PACs, especially in closely contested races, has the potential to be crucial. According to Federal Election Commission regulations, individuals can contribute up to $5,000 to PACs like Stand With Crypto, potentially accumulating up to $2.2 billion in support funds. In contrast, Super PACs can receive unlimited funds from corporations, a category to which Coinbase has already contributed millions to support related initiatives.

The Evolution of Crypto PACs

The launch of the PAC represents a progression of the Stand With Crypto project initiated by Coinbase in 2023. Since its inception, the project has collected over $86 million in donations for various pro-crypto initiatives. While the exact amount of these funds allocated to the PAC remains unspecified, the group’s chief strategist, Nick Carr, has emphasized their commitment to endorsing candidates who champion crypto rights.

The efforts of Stand With Crypto have already made a significant impact on the political landscape. The group hosted a forum attended by US presidential candidates before the confirmation of Donald Trump as the Republican presidential nominee. It actively advocates for congressional support of cryptocurrency-friendly legislation, evaluating candidates based on their stance on crypto policies from A to F. Some of the recommended candidates include Bernie Moreno, a Republican running for Ohio’s Senate seat, and Shomari Figures, a Democrat vying for a congressional seat in Alabama.

The influence of PACs in elections is evident in the intense competition for the Massachusetts Senate seat currently held by Democrat Elizabeth Warren, known for her critical views on the crypto industry. Warren faces opposition from Republican John Deaton, an attorney actively involved in advocating for crypto users and challenging Warren’s perspectives.

Crypto Becomes a Key Issue for Voters

As the US prepares for the upcoming general elections, with the balance of power in Congress and the presidency at stake, PACs focused on crypto are emerging as major players in the political arena. Other groups such as Fairshake and its affiliates, Defend American Jobs and Protect Progress, have also raised substantial funds exceeding $100 million to support candidates who endorse digital asset-friendly policies.

A recent survey conducted by the Blockchain Association has revealed a growing interest among voters in crucial US swing states in backing politicians who support digital assets. The survey, which included over 1,200 registered voters from states like Michigan, Nevada, Ohio, Montana, Pennsylvania, and Arizona, indicates a significant dissatisfaction with the traditional financial system, perceived as favoring the elite and lacking transparency.

The survey, published on May 7, highlights that while only a minority of respondents feel that the current financial system meets their needs, a significant portion of the electorate views cryptocurrencies positively, associating them with innovation and accessibility. Currently, 14% of those surveyed own crypto, but 31% have favorable views toward it, seeing it as a means to financial security and prosperity.
