Green Bay Hires Doug Gottlieb as Men’s Basketball Coach
Green Bay recently announced the appointment of sports media personality Doug Gottlieb as its new men’s basketball coach. The decision was finalized on Tuesday, following the departure of former coach Sundance Wicks, who left the program to take on the head coaching role at Wyoming. Athletic director Josh Moon wasted no time in selecting Gottlieb as Wicks’ successor, with an introductory press conference scheduled for the following day.
Gottlieb expressed his gratitude upon accepting the position, stating, “It is an honor beyond measure to be named the 10th men’s basketball coach in UWGB history. Every kid has a dream growing up — some want to be a firefighter, others want to be president. I have always wanted to be a head basketball coach at the Division I level.”
Despite lacking prior college coaching experience, Gottlieb brings a wealth of basketball knowledge and experience to the table. He has contributed to the coaching staff for the United States team at the 2009 and 2017 Maccabiah Games, serving as an assistant under Bruce Pearl in 2009 and later as the head coach in 2017. Additionally, Gottlieb was a contender for the Oklahoma State coaching position before the school ultimately hired Mike Boynton. He also worked as a consultant for the Cowboys’ program in the most recent season.
Chancellor Mike Alexander of UWGB expressed confidence in Gottlieb’s ability to lead the team, emphasizing his energy, passion for the game, mentorship capabilities, and belief in the local community. Gottlieb’s extensive media career spanning ESPN, CBS, and Fox Sports, coupled with his standout performance as a point guard during his college days at Oklahoma State, further cement his qualifications for the role. He remains among the top 15 career assists leaders in NCAA history.
Having grown up in Milwaukee and with a father who previously served as head coach at a local university, Gottlieb shared his excitement at the prospect of returning to Wisconsin to fulfill his coaching aspirations. While taking on this new role, he reportedly plans to continue hosting his radio show on Fox Sports, showcasing his commitment to both coaching and media responsibilities.
