The Colorado Avalanche Stars Shine Bright in Game 5
If the Colorado Avalanche were to fend off elimination in Game 5, the onus was on their star players to step up to the challenge. Following three consecutive losses where Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar, and Mikko Rantanen had struggled, the pivotal moment had arrived.
Stars coach Pete DeBoer acknowledged the tough test his team faced, stating it is no small feat to defeat any team four times in a row, let alone the mighty Colorado Avalanche in the conference semifinals when only eight teams remain in the league. While expressing disappointment in the loss, he commended the Avalanche for playing a strong road game.
Cale Makar’s two goals, Nathan MacKinnon’s goal and assist, and Mikko Rantanen’s contribution marked a comeback for the Avalanche. They broke a 2-2 tie by scoring three goals in the third period, securing a 5-3 victory and setting the stage for Game 6 in Denver.
The Avalanche’s Resurgence
The turnaround in Game 5 contrasted starkly with the Avs’ lackluster performance in their previous game following Val Nichushkin’s suspension. Determined to bounce back, MacKinnon and his teammates delivered on their promise to perform better.
Avalanche coach Jared Bednar praised the team’s effort, especially highlighting Makar’s outstanding play in creating scoring opportunities for himself and his linemates. The Avalanche’s struggling power play also found success, contributing to their victory.
Although the first period saw a strong display from both teams, the Avalanche only managed to tie the game with a last-second goal by Artturi Lehkonen. As the game progressed, Makar and Miro Heiskanen traded goals before the Avalanche took their first lead of the series in the third period off a Casey Mittelstadt goal.
Exciting Finale
Makar’s second goal of the night was quickly countered by Logan Stankoven, setting the stage for a tense final period. The game remained uncertain until MacKinnon’s insurance goal in the closing minutes, sealing the Avalanche’s victory.
Coach Bednar praised the team’s resilience in the face of adversity, highlighting their ability to come back from deficits. Makar’s stellar play throughout the game, including the game-winning goal, showcased his exceptional skill and determination.
Despite the loss, Stars defenseman Chris Tanev’s early exit due to a dental issue highlighted the physical nature of the game. The Avalanche welcomed back Devon Toews to the lineup, but also suffered a setback with Yakov Trenin exiting the game early.
Looking Ahead
As the series now stands at 3-2 in favor of the Stars, MacKinnon emphasized the team’s determination to keep their season alive and force a Game 7. With a must-win scenario on home ice, the Avalanche are eager to capitalize on their home advantage and push for a decisive seventh game.
Despite the uphill battle, the Avalanche’s resounding Game 5 victory has injected new life into the series, setting the stage for an exciting conclusion in Game 6.
