Dani Alves Fails to Post Bail, Remains in Prison

Dani Alves, the former Brazil footballer, will be spending the weekend in prison due to his failure to produce the required €1 million bail for his conditional release pending the outcome of an appeal to his rape conviction. Despite being granted bail earlier in the week after a 4½-year sentence, Alves was unable to secure the necessary funds for his release for the third consecutive day on Friday.

Alves’ legal team had requested an extension to the deadline for the payment but was unsuccessful in delivering the required amount. It has been confirmed that the payment cannot be made over the weekend.

Efforts to Raise Funds

Sources revealed that Alves was exploring various options to gather the €1 million, including leveraging his assets and seeking money owed to him by the Spanish Tax Agency. The goal is to have the funds ready by early next week.

Neymar Sr., the father of Alves’ former teammate Neymar, stated that neither he nor his son would assist with the bail, despite having helped Alves financially since his arrest in early 2023. This decision came after Alves was convicted of sexual assault in late 2022.

Conditions of Release

In order to be released, Alves must surrender his Brazilian and Spanish passports, submit the bail amount, and is prohibited from leaving the country. He is also required to stay away from the victim, with a specified distance, and must report to the courthouse weekly.

The decision to grant bail has sparked controversy, with the victim’s lawyer criticizing the move as favoring the wealthy.

Following the sentencing, Alves has served 14 months of his 4½-year term, having been in pre-trial detention since his arrest in 2023.

Footballers as Role Models

Brazil full-back Danilo emphasized the importance of footballers serving as positive influences, particularly in the wake of Alves’ and Robinho’s convictions for sexual offenses. Danilo stressed the need for athletes to understand their influence and set examples both on and off the field, guiding young people towards respectful behavior and empowerment of women.
