President Biden's Commitment to Reopen the Port of Baltimore

President Biden promised to put the full weight of the federal government behind getting the Port of Baltimore reopened after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed. Just 11 weeks later, the port is fully operational.

President Biden's Response

In a statement, the President expressed his satisfaction with the port's reopening:

"I made clear that my Administration would move heaven and earth to reopen the Port of Baltimore – one of our nation’s largest shipping hubs. Today, thanks to the tireless work by the men and women in the Unified Command, the full navigation channel is now open to all vessel traffic, allowing a full return of commerce to the Port of Baltimore."

Immediately after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, the U.S. Coast Guard sprang into action. They set up a Unified Command on the same day to assist in rescue and recovery operations. Working alongside the Army Corps of Engineers, they swiftly removed the wreckage from the channel.

The Departments of Transportation, Labor, and the Small Business Administration collaborated with federal and state partners to minimize supply chain disruptions, keeping costs down for Americans. President Biden acknowledged Governor Moore for his leadership, as well as Mayor Scott, County Executive Olszewski, and the Maryland congressional delegation for their support.

The teamwork between federal, state, and local governments, labor leaders, and the business community demonstrated what can be achieved through collaboration.

The President expressed his condolences to the families of the bridge collapse victims and assured continued support for the community throughout the recovery process.

Sec. of Transportation Pete Buttigieg's Insights

During a press call, Secretary Buttigieg elaborated on the swift reopening of the port:

"The Biden Harris administration's proactive measures, including the White House Supply Chains Disruptions Task Force and the FLOW data sharing program, positioned us to respond effectively to unexpected events like the bridge collapse. By sharing data with public and private partners, we monitored cargo demand shifts, aiding in supply chain adaptation."

Secretary Buttigieg emphasized ongoing efforts to bolster supply chain resilience and support Baltimore and its workers. While acknowledging the long road to bridge reconstruction, he commended the collective efforts that led to the port's expedited reopening.

Biden's Competent Governance in Action

President Biden's swift response to the Port of Baltimore crisis showcases effective governance. In contrast to the previous administration, Biden's focus on results over drama is evident. The public must recognize and appreciate competent government, especially after the failures experienced in the past.

The early reopening of the Port of Baltimore highlights Biden's ability to deliver on promises and drive progress.

Hubble Space Telescope Captures Stunning Image of Distant Galaxy

The Hubble Space Telescope, despite its age, has once again amazed us with a breathtaking photo of a distant galaxy. The latest image showcases the barred spiral galaxy NGC 3059, located approximately 57 million light-years away from Earth.

Released on June 7, the photograph was taken in May using the Wide Field Camera 3 instrument as part of a broader study of galaxies, as detailed in a statement from NASA.

The telescope utilizes a variety of filters for its observations, each allowing specific wavelengths of light to reach its instruments. The recent view of NGC 3059 combines data from narrow and wide-band filters, highlighting pinkish star-forming regions and bluish patches with different stellar populations.

"Narrow-band filters are crucial from a scientific standpoint as they isolate specific wavelengths associated with distinct physical and chemical processes," explained NASA officials. "For instance, hydrogen atoms can emit red light at 656.46 nanometers, known as H-alpha emission, which is indicative of newly forming stars."

While narrow-band filters focus on specific wavelengths, wide-band filters capture a broader range of wavelengths, enabling astronomers to study different sections of the electromagnetic spectrum. By combining data from multiple filters, detailed images of cosmic objects like NGC 3059 can be created.

Protecting Hubble's Future

In recent news, Hubble was placed in a protective "safe mode" to conserve its remaining two functioning gyroscopes, vital for orienting the telescope and targeting celestial objects. Currently operating with only one gyro, the decision aims to extend the telescope's lifespan, ensuring it continues to provide captivating views of the universe for years to come.

Matt Bomer’s Audition for Superman: Flyby

Read Time:2 Minute
[ad_1]

Superman: Flyby - The Lost Opportunity

Throughout the history of Superman movies, there have been numerous failed attempts to bring the iconic hero to the big screen. One of the most infamous of these failed projects is Superman: Flyby, a film that never saw the light of day but had the potential for greatness. One actor who came close to donning the cape was Matt Bomer, who recently revealed that his sexuality may have cost him the role.

The Audition Process

Bomer shared his experience in a recent interview, recalling how he went through a rigorous month-long audition process for the role of Superman in Flyby. Directed by Brett Ratner and penned by J.J. Abrams, the film was set to revamp the Superman story in a new and exciting way. Bomer was Ratner's top choice for the role of Clark Kent and even signed a three-picture deal, but things took a turn for the worse.

Unfortunately, Ratner left the project in 2003, and the film was eventually revamped under director McG before Bryan Singer took over and made Superman Returns with Brandon Routh in the lead role. Bomer believes that his sexuality played a part in the studio's decision to pass on him as the Man of Steel.

Sexuality in Hollywood

Bomer, who came out as gay in 2012, reflects on a time when being open about one's sexuality could be used against them in the industry. He expressed his belief that his sexuality was a factor in the studio's sudden disinterest in him for the role. While some sources denied these claims, Bomer remains convinced that his openness about being gay affected his chances.

Despite missing out on Superman, Bomer did get a chance to portray the hero in the 2013 animated film Superman: Unbound. Additionally, he found a home in the DC Universe playing Larry Trainor, aka Negative Man, in the acclaimed Doom Patrol series, a role that allowed him to bring his own experiences as a gay man to the character.

While the true reasons behind Bomer's exclusion from Superman: Flyby may never be fully known, his journey in Hollywood serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ actors in the industry.

EU to Impose New Tariffs on Chinese Electric Vehicles

The European Commission announced on Wednesday its intention to implement a series of tariffs aimed at curbing the influx of Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) into Europe. The move comes as part of an ongoing investigation into what the Commission considers unfair subsidization within the Chinese EV market.

Under the new tariffs, vehicles from manufacturers such as BYD will face a 17.4% duty, Geely a 20% tax, and SAIC could see tariffs as high as 38.1%. Other Chinese battery EV makers will also be subject to duties, with rates averaging 21% for those who cooperated with regulators and up to 38.1% for those who did not.

The European Commission stated, "The battery electric vehicles value chain in China benefits from unfair subsidization, which is causing a threat of economic injury to EU BEV producers." If discussions with Beijing do not lead to a resolution, the initial measures will be implemented on July 4, with definitive actions to follow within four months.

Implications of the Tariffs

The EU's decision to impose tariffs on Chinese EVs mirrors similar actions taken by the United States, which announced plans to increase duties on EV imports from China. The goal is to level the playing field for European and American EV manufacturers who have faced stiff competition from Chinese companies benefiting from government subsidies.

Despite the tariffs, Chinese automakers remain committed to investing in Europe. Cui Dongshu, Secretary General of the China Passenger Car Association, affirmed that Chinese firms are focused on building long-term partnerships and will not disrupt the stability of employment in Europe through aggressive pricing strategies.

Chinese EV manufacturers, such as Chery Automobile, are already establishing production facilities in Europe. Chery has a plant in Spain and is in talks with Italy to expand its operations. Additionally, Hungary has become a strategic location for Chinese battery makers and automakers, with BYD planning to build a new factory in the country.

Partnerships and Investments

Several European carmakers have strong ties to Chinese companies. Geely, for instance, owns Volvo and Polestar, both of which have production facilities in Europe. Volvo recently shifted production of its China-made EVs to Belgium to avoid the new tariffs.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares predicts that Chinese automakers could capture up to 10% of the European market, equivalent to 1.5 million cars. Stellantis is collaborating with China's Leapmotor to sell vehicles in nine European countries, with plans to manufacture them in Poland.

Overall, the tariff imposition reflects the growing competition in the global EV market and the efforts of various governments to protect their domestic industries while fostering fair competition.

VP Harris: Medical Debt No Longer Counts Against Credit Score

0

Read Time:2 Minute
[ad_1]

Vice President Kamala Harris Announces Change in Medical Debt Reporting

Vice President Kamala Harris has made a significant announcement regarding medical debt in the United States. She stated that medical debt will no longer be allowed to negatively impact people's credit scores. This decision comes as part of the Biden administration's efforts to enhance the financial well-being of Americans.

Addressing the Issue of Medical Debt

During a call with reporters, Harris highlighted the challenges faced by over 100 million Americans burdened with medical debt. Medical expenses often arise from unforeseen emergencies, leading to financial strains amounting to tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. One of the most severe consequences of medical debt is its detrimental effect on credit scores.

Having medical debt can hinder individuals from obtaining essential loans, such as car loans, home loans, or small business loans. This financial barrier not only makes daily life harder but also diminishes the prospects of economic advancement. Harris emphasized the unfairness of penalizing individuals with medical debt, noting that they are as likely to repay loans as those without such debt.

Therefore, Harris proudly announced that medical debt will soon be excluded from credit score calculations. This change will prevent medical debt from being a factor in loan applications, offering relief to millions of Americans. On average, this adjustment is expected to raise credit scores by 20 points for many individuals, enabling approximately 22,000 more families to qualify for mortgages annually.

The Vice President reiterated the administration's commitment to alleviating medical debt, citing the forgiveness of over 650 million dollars to date. Additionally, plans are in place to eliminate another 7 billion dollars in medical debt, aiming to create a future where everyone has the opportunity to accumulate wealth and contribute to a robust economy.

Positive Impact on Americans

A White House Fact Sheet outlined the benefits of the administration's actions. By removing medical debt from the credit reports of more than 15 million Americans, their credit scores are projected to increase by an average of 20 points. This boost will facilitate the approval of approximately 22,000 additional mortgages annually.

The proposed rule by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) aims to ensure that no American has medical debt listed on their credit report, a significant improvement from the 46 million individuals affected in 2020. Harris also called upon states, local governments, and healthcare providers to take further steps in reducing the burden of medical debt, building on the progress initiated by the American Rescue Plan.

Opposition and Potential Threats

Despite the positive impact of these measures, Republicans have been actively seeking to abolish the CFPB, jeopardizing initiatives like the recent one on medical debt. If successful, these efforts would leave millions of Americans vulnerable to increased debt and diminished consumer protections. The potential removal of crucial financial reforms, including the exclusion of medical debt from credit assessments, underscores the importance of current policies in safeguarding individuals' financial stability.

Elections hold significant consequences, and the prospect of a second Trump administration could substantially worsen the financial outlook for many Americans.

Read Time:3 Minute
[ad_1]

The Rise of Blockchain Gaming Among Professional Gamers

Blockchain gaming has transcended its origins among casual gamers and is now capturing the attention of professional players. The integration of blockchain technology into gaming offers unprecedented opportunities for ownership, transparency, and monetization, making it an enticing prospect for top-tier individuals in the gaming industry. The future of blockchain gaming holds great promise for pro gamers, as it is poised to revolutionize how they engage with games, earn money, and enhance their careers.

Ownership and Monetization of In-game Items

One of the most groundbreaking aspects of blockchain gaming is the concept of true ownership facilitated by NFTs (non-fungible tokens). In contrast to traditional games where in-game items are controlled by developers, blockchain technology empowers players to have genuine ownership of their digital assets. This means that items like weapons, skins, or avatars can be bought, sold, or traded through a player's unique digital wallet.

This shift is particularly significant for professional gamers who often invest substantial time and resources into acquiring rare in-game assets. By leveraging NFTs, these players can now generate additional income by selling exclusive items on secondary markets, creating a new revenue stream based on their skills and dedication. This financial incentive rewards pro gamers for their expertise in a way that was previously unattainable.

Furthermore, the use of NFTs introduces a level of scarcity that enhances the value of virtual items. Once an item is tokenized on the blockchain, its immutable nature ensures that it cannot be duplicated or altered, preserving its uniqueness within the digital realm. This scarcity factor contributes to the high worth assigned to certain virtual objects, mirroring the premium prices commanded by rare physical collectibles.

Fair and Transparent Tournaments

Blockchain technology is also being explored as a solution to the longstanding issues of transparency and fairness in gaming tournaments and events. In the realm of eSports, concerns about the equitable distribution of prize money have plagued the industry. Blockchain addresses these challenges by guaranteeing that all transactions are transparent and immutable, preventing any tampering or deletion.

By utilizing smart contracts, tournament organizers can automate prize payouts, ensuring that winners receive their earnings promptly and without the possibility of manipulation. The transparency provided by blockchain technology not only enhances the credibility of eSports competitions but also encourages greater participation from players and bettors who value fair and secure prize distribution.

New Earning Opportunities

Beyond traditional gaming revenue streams, blockchain opens up new avenues for earning potential. One innovative concept involves the creation of tokens that fans can purchase to support their favorite professional gamers or teams. These tokens may grant holders access to exclusive content, VIP experiences, or a share of the team's revenue.

By selling cryptocurrencies to their supporters, pro gamers can establish direct connections with their fan bases, fostering a more interactive and supportive community. This model not only increases funding for players but also diversifies their income sources, reducing reliance on traditional sponsorships.

Furthermore, blockchain technology enables investments in eSports organizations through tokenization. Teams can raise funds by selling tokens that represent ownership stakes or other forms of involvement in the team's success. This democratized approach to investment allows anyone passionate about eSports to participate in the growth of the industry without intermediaries.

Conclusion

In conclusion, blockchain gaming is set to transform the landscape of professional gaming. Pro gamers stand to benefit greatly from blockchain technology, enjoying enhanced ownership of in-game items, transparent tournaments, and novel revenue streams. As the gaming industry continues to evolve, blockchain will play an increasingly pivotal role, making it essential for eSports players to embrace this innovative technology to stay competitive in the field.

Joey Chestnut to Skip Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest

Joey Chestnut, the 16-time champion of the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, will not compete in the annual Fourth of July event next month, Major League Eating announced Tuesday.

A spokesperson for Major League Eating (MLE) told ESPN that Chestnut had chosen to "represent another hot dog brand" and therefore would not be allowed to participate in the Nathan's contest, which is held annually at New York City's Coney Island.

Chestnut, competitive eating's biggest star who is known as "Jaws," has won the event eight years in a row. He reportedly agreed to a sponsorship deal with Impossible Foods, a company that makes plant-based hot dogs, and a competing company to Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs.

"It would be like Michael Jordan saying to Nike, 'I'm going to represent Adidas, too,'" MLE event organizer George Shea said.

Chestnut, in turn, issued his own statement on X, expressing his disappointment at not being able to compete.

"I love celebrating America with my fans all over this great country on the 4th and I have been training to defend my title," Chestnut said in his post. "Sadly, this is the decision Nathan's and Major League Eating are making, and it will deprive the great fans of the holiday's usual joy and entertainment."

Impossible Foods expressed their support for Chestnut, stating that they back him "in any contest he chooses" and emphasizing that "meat eaters shouldn't have to be exclusive to just one wiener."

Misunderstanding and Disappointment

Major League Eating stated that they were "devastated" by Chestnut's decision to represent a rival brand that sells plant-based hot dogs.

"For nearly two decades we have worked under the same basic hot dog exclusivity provisions. However, it seems that Joey and his managers have prioritized a new partnership with a different hot dog brand over our long-time relationship," MLE said in its statement.

Chestnut clarified that he doesn't have a contract with MLE or Nathan's, and he feels they are changing the rules from past years regarding partnerships he can engage in.

Future Plans

Chestnut, who owns the top 10 performances at the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, including a record 76 hot dogs and buns in 2021, reassured his fans that they would see him in action again soon.

"Rest assured that you'll see me eat again soon!! STAY HUNGRY!" he posted on X.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Nationwide Availability

Diamond Shruumz candies are available nationwide, both online and in various retail locations, including smoke/vape shops and retailers selling hemp-derived products.

States affected by the outbreak include Alabama, Arizona, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina.

Company Response

Diamond Schruumz has not responded to requests for comment. The company's products are marketed as "trippy," "psychedelic," and "hallucinogenic," though lab reports show they do not contain psilocybin.

The candies allegedly contain a blend of Lion’s mane, Reishi, and Chaga mushrooms, described as nootropic and functional. The FDA, Poison Centers, and CDC are investigating the cause of the poisonings.

Joey Chestnut, Hot Dog Eating Champion, Skips 2024 Nathan’s Contest

In an unexpected turn of events, Joey Chestnut, the 16-time hot dog eating champion, will not be participating in this year's Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest. Instead, Chestnut has signed a deal with Impossible Foods, a plant-based food company, leaving fans and organizers disappointed.

The Major League Eating organization expressed their dismay in a statement, saying, “We are devastated to learn that Joey Chestnut has chosen to represent a rival brand that sells plant-based hot dogs rather than competing in the 2024 Nathan’s Famous contest.” Despite efforts to accommodate Chestnut, including agreeing to an appearance fee, he opted to pursue other opportunities.

Richard Shea, the president of Major League Eating, clarified that Chestnut is not banned from future competitions. "There is no ban. Major League Eating wants him there. The fans want him there. Nathan’s wants him there," Shea emphasized.

Chestnut's Legacy

Joey Chestnut, aged 40, is widely regarded as "the greatest eater in history." Holding the world record for hot dog consumption, he once devoured 76 hot dogs and buns in just 10 minutes. Despite his absence this year, fans remain hopeful for his return in the future.

Speculation surrounds Chestnut's decision, with reports suggesting he received a substantial offer to skip this year's contest. Last year, he allegedly earned $200,000 for his participation, with a contract worth $1.2 million over four years on the table.

Whether Chestnut will make a surprise appearance at the hot dog contest remains uncertain. His legacy as a dominant force in competitive eating continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

Donald Trump Admits Illegal Gun Possession in Florida

Donald Trump Admits Illegal Possession of Gun

During an interview with a probation officer, Donald Trump confessed to illegally having a gun in Florida, which violates federal and state laws. The New York City Department of Probation officials have questioned Trump about an additional gun registered in New York and his access to firearms as part of their pre-sentencing interview.

A city official briefed on the exchange stated that Trump, who was convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records last month, acknowledged having a gun in Florida, believed to be one of the three weapons listed on his New York City permit to carry concealed weapons.

It is crucial to note that the possession of firearms or ammunition by a convicted felon is a federal crime, making Trump's admission a significant legal issue.

Implications of Trump's Admission

Trump's acknowledgment of illegal gun possession raises questions about his regard for the law. If the Department of Justice applies the same standard to Trump as they did to Hunter Biden, he could face indictment and charges for federal gun crimes. This development aligns with previous accusations of Trump mishandling classified documents.

Moreover, given that Trump is entitled to Secret Service protection, the necessity for him to possess an illegal gun is questionable. This situation prompts reflection on whether Trump considered himself above the law despite being a convicted felon.

The irony of an ex-president, who claims to uphold law and order, violating firearms laws is not lost on observers. The incident adds another layer to the ongoing legal challenges surrounding Trump's business practices and personal conduct.

CNN's report on the matter underscores the potential legal ramifications Trump may face for his admission.

Starfield: Shattered Space Expansion Announced

The Future of Starfield: Shattered Space Expansion

Despite the generally favorable reviews and great sales numbers, Starfield failed to impress some longtime Bethesda fanatics, mainly because its vast yet relatively more grounded sci-fi universe wasn't as engaging as it could be. However, the data supports the ongoing work that all major Bethesda Game Studios releases have received in the past until they reached their full potential, and the first expansion, Shattered Space, is already on the horizon.

A New Adventure Awaits

Straight from Bethesda Softworks, here's the fresh synopsis: "A mysterious power stirs in the city of Dazra on House Va'ruun's hidden homeworld. Investigate a frightening cosmic threat, explore a new planet, and find unique weapons, spacesuits, and gear in this all-new adventure." Indeed, Starfield players eager to learn more about the game's universe will finally get to meet House Va'ruun properly and see what they've been up to.

The prominent faction was oddly underrepresented in Starfield's base game content, which led to many fans theorizing that the mysterious side of the Settled Systems was going to be explored in Shattered Space. Now we know they were totally right.

Exciting Additions

Shattered Space seems to be adding much of the mysticism, horror, and zaniness that some players felt were missing to the game, and we can't wait to see where this story arc is taken. Additionally, we believe players will get to access tons of cool new loot and equipment (and maybe even some awesome ships).

If you want to look at the cosmic horror-heavy adventure that is arriving towards the end of 2024, watch the first full trailer, together with an introduction to the all-new free (and paid) content now available in-game alongside official mod support.

Modding Support and Updates

As for the stuff presented at the end of the video, players are now able to access, much like in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4, Starfield's own Creation Club, which is found in-game and streamlines the process of adding mods to the game. There are, of course, some limitations to this system versus the more intricate, out-of-game process of modding, but it's a tidy and quick way to add plenty of mods to your game. Also, this is available for the Xbox version of the game too, albeit with some size and content limits.

As soon as you jump into this section of the game, you'll see that some new pieces of content from Bethesda Game Studios and verified modders need to be bought with the premium credits, so make sure you like what you're seeing before doing so. As a quick reminder, the Premium Edition of the game, which has access to Shattered Space, also includes 1,000 of those credits, so that's nice.

Regardless, Bethesda has added free content to the CC as well, and you should grab it as soon as you load up the game, as those bits are 'achievement friendly' too (regular mods disable achievements).

Keep scrolling and you'll also find the ever-growing list of regular free mods, and that's just the stuff being uploaded to Bethesda's platform. For PC players, this is just the beginning of a refreshed, juiced-up space odyssey now that modding tools (known as Creation Kit) are finally out.

Elon Musk Drops Lawsuit Against OpenAI and Sam Altman

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has decided to drop his lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman. This choice comes just before a federal judge was scheduled to determine the future of the case, as reported by CNBC.

In court documents filed in San Francisco Superior Court, Musk's attorneys requested the breach of contract lawsuit be dismissed without prejudice, leaving room for potential re-filing in the future. Despite this legal move, Musk has not made any public statements regarding the decision.

Musk's Criticism of Apple and OpenAI

The news follows Musk's public criticism of Apple's partnership with OpenAI. On Monday, Musk stated that if Apple integrates OpenAI at the operating system level, he would ban Apple products from his companies due to security concerns.

Earlier in March, Musk initiated the lawsuit against OpenAI, Altman, and OpenAI president Greg Brockman, alleging a breach of contract. Musk claimed that the developer of ChatGPT had strayed from its original goal of creating AI for the betterment of humanity.

Musk accused OpenAI of keeping the design of GPT-4 confidential and engaging in exclusive licensing agreements with Microsoft, essentially transforming OpenAI into a profit-driven entity, contrary to its initial humanitarian mission.

While the “Founding Agreement” mentioned in the lawsuit has not been disclosed, Musk's legal action referenced the company's California Certificate of Incorporation, which stipulated that the technology developed by OpenAI should benefit the public.

OpenAI responded to Musk's claims by releasing internal emails suggesting that profitability was also important to Musk. Despite this legal battle, Musk has emphasized his role in recruiting key scientists and engineers for OpenAI.

After OpenAI publicly launched GPT-4 last year, Musk joined other tech leaders in urging a six-month pause on ChatGPT development. Following this, Musk founded xAI, a rival AI developer that introduced its chatbot, Grok, in November.

Despite the withdrawal of the lawsuit, OpenAI continues to face scrutiny over its safety and security practices. Several executives have departed, citing a focus on "shiny products" over careful AI development.

OpenAI recently announced a new safety and security committee, though the committee is led by Altman. Decrypt reached out to OpenAI for comment, but no immediate response was provided.

Yariel Rodriguez Shines in Fifth Rehab Start

Yariel Rodriguez seems poised to make his return to the major leagues after an impressive performance in his fifth rehab start with triple-A Buffalo. The right-hander, who was disguised as the Malmö Oat Milkers for the night, threw 67 pitches over 4.0 scoreless innings, striking out 10 batters while allowing just three hits and one walk.

In his previous outing with the Bisons, Rodriguez delivered 3.0 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. However, he returned to the rotation on Tuesday and continued to impress at the triple-A level.

According to Baseball Savant, Rodriguez showcased five different pitches during the game. He threw 23 fastballs, 19 curveballs, 16 sliders, eight splitters, and one sinker. His fastball reached a top speed of 95.1 mph and averaged 92.3 mph, generating four whiffs on nine swings.

Notably, his slider was particularly effective, inducing whiffs on all three occasions Worcester hitters swung at it, while also landing it for a called strike seven times.

Currently sidelined with thoracic spine inflammation, Rodriguez's imminent return will be a significant boost for the Toronto Blue Jays. The team recently learned that Alek Manoah will miss the remainder of the season following UCL surgery, creating a need for pitching depth.

Bowden Francis most recently filled the No. 5 starter role for the Blue Jays, pitching 4.0 innings in a victory over the Oakland Athletics.

Throughout his five rehab appearances, Rodriguez has surrendered just one run, with his rehab assignment scheduled to conclude on June 19. Prior to his injury, the 27-year-old had recorded a 4.11 ERA with 16 strikeouts in 15.1 innings across four starts in the MLB.

After his latest stellar performance on Tuesday, Rodriguez has lowered his minor-league ERA to an impressive 0.52, striking out 26 batters in 17.1 innings.

Elon Musk Drops Lawsuit Against OpenAI

Elon Musk has decided to drop his lawsuit against OpenAI, as revealed in two court filings on June 11. One filing indicates that Musk, as the plaintiff, submitted a notice of entry of dismissal and proof of service. The other filing notes that the case has been dismissed without prejudice, allowing Musk the option to refile it in the future.

CNBC reported on the same day that the Superior Court of California of the County of San Francisco had scheduled a hearing for June 12, which was ultimately canceled after Musk withdrew the case. The hearing was intended to address a request from OpenAI and its associated defendants to dismiss the lawsuit.

The Lawsuit Details

Musk initially filed the lawsuit against OpenAI, its co-founder and CEO, Sam Altman, and several other members of the company on Feb. 29. The lawsuit included various allegations, such as breach of contract and engaging in unfair competition. Musk claimed that OpenAI had shifted its focus from developing AI for the benefit of humanity to pursuing profits, adopting a closed-source model, and effectively becoming a subsidiary of its main funder and partner, Microsoft.

In response, OpenAI issued a public statement in March, asserting that Musk himself had acknowledged the necessity of a for-profit approach. The organization expressed its intention to seek a dismissal of the case back then.

It's worth noting that Musk was a co-founder of OpenAI and served on the company's board until 2018. He is now leading xAI, a competing firm with purportedly pro-humanity objectives. xAI recently secured $6 billion in funding in May, pushing its valuation to $24 billion.

Tragic Submersible Incident Revisited

Almost a year has passed since the Titan submersible, operated by OceanGate, suffered a catastrophic implosion as it descended to the ocean floor to explore the Titanic wreck. The CEO of the company, Stockton Rush, along with four other individuals, tragically lost their lives in the accident.

A recent article by Wired delved into the troubled development of the Titan submersible and highlighted the warning signs that were overlooked leading up to the disaster. Prior to the Titan, OceanGate had constructed the Cyclops, a steel-hulled prototype, to test the concept of a submersible.

A Challenging Test Dive

Wired reporter Mark Harris accompanied Rush on a test dive in the Cyclops in Seattle's Elliott Bay. The journey encountered various challenges, with the sub experiencing software glitches and compass malfunctions. At one point, they even got lost on the seafloor, adding to the tension of the expedition.

"Ninety minutes later and 130 meters deeper, we were totally lost. The shipwreck we aimed to explore was nowhere to be seen," described Harris.

Rush, undeterred by the difficulties faced during the Cyclops dive, emphasized the importance of starting with a prototype to iron out such issues before progressing to more advanced submersibles. He remained optimistic about the future, despite the setbacks.

From Cyclops to Titan

The Cyclops prototype eventually evolved into the Titan submersible. The article on Wired further explores the concerns surrounding the Titan's carbon-fiber construction, including Boeing's initial involvement in the design process.

Boeing had produced a detailed 70-page preliminary design for the Titan but later distanced itself from the project. The intricacies of carbon-fiber construction and the challenges it posed are thoroughly examined in the Wired piece.

For more details, you can read the full article on Wired here.

Rep. Raskin: Democrats Support Rule of Law

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) Defends Democrats' Support for Rule of Law

During a recent statement, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) emphasized that not a single Democrat has attacked the courts or claimed fraud following the Hunter Biden verdict. Raskin highlighted the Democratic Party's commitment to the rule of law and contrasted it with the behavior of some Republicans.

Raskin pointed out, "I’ve not heard a single Democrat anywhere in the country cry fraud, cry fixed, cry rigged, cry kangaroo court, or any of the many epithets that our colleagues have mobilized against the US Department of Justice and our federal court system. Despite the fact that Donald Trump was not even tried in federal court that was at the state level."

He continued, "President Biden believed in the rule of law, which is why he did not interfere with or attack his son’s prosecution. The American people have a clear contrast laid out before them. Joe Biden and the Democratic Party have proven in both word and deed that they support the idea that no one is above the law."

Contrasting Views on Justice System

While Democrats advocate for upholding the rule of law, some Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, have been critical of the justice system. Trump and the Republican Party have been accused of attempting to undermine the American justice system to avoid accountability for alleged crimes.

If voters prioritize maintaining a system where everyone is held accountable, regardless of their status, they may consider supporting Biden and the Democratic Party in upcoming elections.

Solar Storms Light Up Mars: Impressive Auroras & Radiation Spike

0
0 0
Read Time:1 Minute
[ad_1]

Solar Storms and Their Impact on Mars

The solar storms that caused spectacular auroras on Earth on May 10 also affected Mars, generating auroras over the Red Planet and exposing its surface to harmful radiation. These storms originated from an active region on the sun known as AR3664. This region was filled with numerous sunspots that unleashed powerful flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) towards both Earth and Mars as it rotated around the sun.

Effects on Mars

One of the most intense flares occurred on May 20, 2024, directly targeting Mars with a barrage of gamma-rays and X-rays followed by a coronal mass ejection. The Curiosity Mars rover's Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) recorded a significant increase in radiation levels during this event, reaching 8,100 micrograys compared to the usual 700 micrograys. While not immediately lethal, prolonged exposure would pose health risks for future astronauts on Mars.

Experts suggest that astronauts could seek shelter in caves to minimize radiation exposure. Pit craters and lava tubes on Mars could offer additional shielding, as proposed by Don Hassler, principal investigator on RAD.

Impact on Spacecraft

The solar radiation also affected orbiting spacecraft. Mars Odyssey's star-finding camera was temporarily disabled, highlighting the vulnerability of space technology to solar events. However, MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN) successfully captured Martian auroras and monitored charged particles raining down on the planet.

Christina Lee of the University of California described this as the largest solar energetic particle event observed by MAVEN, indicating the widespread effects of the solar storm across the solar system.

Future Solar Activity

With the sun's cycle of activity approaching its peak in July 2025, more solar storms are expected in the coming months. Earth's protective magnetic field and atmosphere mitigate the effects of these storms, whereas Mars, lacking a global magnetic field and with a thin atmosphere, faces direct exposure.

During a solar storm, Earth's magnetotail traps charged particles, creating auroras near the poles. In contrast, Mars lacks this protective mechanism, leading to widespread auroras tinted green due to the presence of oxygen in its atmosphere.

As solar activity increases, monitoring the effects on Mars will provide valuable insights for future manned missions to the red planet.

BlockDAG Shines with 1120% Growth in Presale Value

While BNB continues to strengthen its position with substantial gains, TRON is currently facing downturns, raising concerns among its investors. Amid these shifts, BlockDAG has emerged as a standout performer with a remarkable 1120% increase in its presale value, currently priced at $0.0122.

This impressive growth can be attributed to the successful launch of BlockDAG’s Keynote 2 and the rollout of the X1 Mining beta app, along with their environmentally friendly mining solutions. These initiatives have positioned BlockDAG as a compelling investment within the dynamic cryptocurrency landscape, drawing attention from investors seeking emerging opportunities.

BNB Reaches New All-Time High

BNB has reached a new record high of $705.07, marking an 11.8% increase. This surge has propelled BNB’s market capitalization to over $108 billion. The coin’s trading volume over the last day ranged between $625.38 and $707.55, reflecting strong market engagement and sustained investor interest.

This upward trend is supported by the robust infrastructure of BNB and the expansion of the Binance Smart Chain (BSC) ecosystem, despite facing fierce competition in the market.

TRON Faces Significant Setbacks

Conversely, TRON is currently experiencing a notable downturn, with a projected 9.55% price drop to $0.11. This decline has left TRON investors uneasy, as confidence in the project wanes.

Despite efforts to upgrade technology with the LayerZero protocol and enhance security through a partnership with a cybersecurity firm based in Dubai, TRON has struggled to regain positive momentum. With many investors impressed by BlockDAG’s exceptional 1120% value growth during the most recent presale, attention is shifting towards more reliable investment options in the volatile cryptocurrency sector.

BlockDAG’s Keynote 2 and X1 Miner App Drive Market Enthusiasm

BlockDAG’s recent Keynote 2 event, broadcast ‘from the moon,’ has sparked a surge of market interest, leading to a remarkable 1120% increase in valuation. This event introduced the X1 Mining App, now available in beta on both Android and iOS, significantly boosting BlockDAG’s presale price from $0.01 to $0.0122.

The development of the X1 App involved various stages such as wireframe design, UI development, and user onboarding, resulting in a robust and user-friendly application. With a compact size of just 50 MB, the app offers a seamless download and efficient user experience, allowing users to manage digital assets effectively and participate in enhanced mining activities. Key features include the ability to mine up to 20 BDAG daily and a boost function that increases mining rates every 24 hours.

BlockDAG has quickly established itself as a significant player in the crypto market, showcased by its recent presale success, which raised $48.8 million and distributed 11.4 billion coins. This achievement underscores the increasing confidence and support of investors in BlockDAG. The latest batch of coins was priced at $0.0122 each, indicating a steady upward price trajectory with expectations of further increases in subsequent batches.

Final Thoughts

BlockDAG stands out in the cryptocurrency realm due to its exceptional growth and innovative technology, particularly at a time when TRON is facing declines and BNB is experiencing price surges. With $48.8 million raised in its latest presale and significant market attention, BlockDAG is rapidly becoming a key player in the blockchain space.

The X1 App represents an attractive option for forward-thinking investors, given its potential to revolutionize blockchain technology. The successful beta launch and strategic marketing efforts have showcased the promise of BlockDAG’s ecosystem.

Las Vegas Aces drop to No. 7 in WNBA Power Rankings

Las Vegas Aces Struggle Amid Injuries and Illness

Chelsea Gray is still rehabbing an injury and hasn't played this season. Fellow guard Jackie Young was ill and not with the team in Sunday's loss. Coach Becky Hammon was ejected late in the game after two technical fouls.

And the two-time defending champion Las Vegas Aces are getting every opponent's best shot. It adds up to a 5-4 record and Las Vegas dropping to No. 7 in ESPN's WNBA Power Rankings.

The Aces went 1-2 this past week, and it's the nature of the Power Rankings that teams can move up and down dramatically week to week. The Aces could rocket back up soon, especially if they right the ship this week. They face the Minnesota Lynx, Phoenix Mercury, and last season's WNBA Finals opponent, the New York Liberty (3 p.m. ET Saturday, ABC). The Liberty, winners of seven in a row, replace the Connecticut Sun at No. 1.

Las Vegas star A'ja Wilson -- who is the MVP front-runner -- said after Sunday's 96-92 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks that there are benefits to early adversity.

"Yeah, we're in a lull right now, it doesn't feel great," Wilson said after the Aces got out to a 14-0 lead Sunday but still lost. "But we have to continue to stick together. If our locker room goes in shambles, then we have a bigger problem than just stat sheets and scoreboards."

"These times are hard, but I guarantee you they will not last forever. It makes you respect the game. Sometimes when you get those bright lights all the time and you're winning, it kind of covers up and masks a lot of different things. But when that adversity hits, that's when you really can tell who's bought in versus who's not. Who's real, who's phony."

Wilson's stats are MVP caliber: She leads the league in scoring (28.3), rebounding (11.8), and blocked shots (3.0). Sunday, she had 31 points and passed the 4,000-point mark in her career, the third-fastest player in the league to reach the milestone (198 games).

She's doing all she can, but the Aces miss Gray and Young, who struggled with sickness through a home loss to the Seattle Storm on Friday and then didn't travel to Los Angeles for Sunday's game. Rookie Kate Martin got her first start in place of Young and finished with 13 points, a bright spot for the Aces.

"I particularly love for Kate to be in these situations," Wilson said. "So when [the playoffs] roll around, it's not a punch in the face. It's familiar. You've been in the trenches."

Polygon Community Votes to Unlock $640 Million in Tokens for Grants

Blockchain tech and gaming company Polygon has announced that its community has voted to unlock the equivalent of $640 million worth of tokens for the purpose of community grants. The initiative aims to support the best projects across the Polygon Layer 2 blockchain and the broader Ethereum landscape.

The Community Treasury has been created following community consensus, with one billion POL tokens set to be unlocked over 10 years. This will amount to about 100 million POL tokens per year, all dedicated to builders within the community. Season 01 of the Community Grants Program will kick off with the distribution of 35 million MATIC tokens (equivalent to $27 million) to projects building on Polygon.

Season 01 Community Grants Program

The Community Grants Program will utilize the funds from the Community Treasury for grantmaking purposes. While the Community Treasury accrues POL tokens, grants for Season 1 will be denominated in MATIC due to an ongoing token upgrade from MATIC to POL. Applications for grants are now open.

The initiative aims to establish an open, community-aligned funding framework that leverages professional Grant Allocators to distribute a portion of the Season 01 funds. Builders have been pivotal to Polygon's success, actively participating in hackathons, accelerators, global meetups, and startup support programs.

Developers within the Polygon community have been instrumental in driving the platform's growth across various protocols and technologies. This has fostered a diverse and thriving community centered around blockchain technology.

What initially began as Village Grants, focusing solely on grants from Polygon Labs, has evolved based on community consensus to establish the Community Treasury. Today, applications are open for the Community Grants Program (CGP).

As the token upgrade from MATIC to POL progresses (with POL set to gradually replace MATIC over the next four years), grants for Season 1 will be distributed in MATIC, with 35 million MATIC tokens (equivalent to $22.7 million) allocated for the first season.

Grant Program Tracks

The inaugural season of the grant program offers two distinct tracks for applicants. The General Grant Track is open to anyone building on Polygon, with a focus on developer tooling, protocol infrastructure, and dApps. The Consumer Crypto Track, on the other hand, targets projects driving crypto adoption, including gaming, NFT innovations, and decentralized social applications.

Projects seeking grants must be building on Polygon or be willing to migrate to the platform for the long term. Notable projects that have benefited from Polygon grants include Quickswap, Keom, Jokerace, and Intraverse.

Community-First Funding Approach

The framework for deploying treasury grant funds is open to community feedback, emphasizing a community-first approach to funding. While the first season of CGP focuses on "consumer crypto," the ultimate goal is to support developers throughout their building process, recognizing that true innovation often requires taking risks along the way.

Startup Helps Americans Find Scarce Medications

A startup is addressing the ongoing shortages of highly-coveted drugs like Adderall and Ozempic in the United States. Insito Health has launched a new service called Medfinder, which aims to connect patients with pharmacies that have these medications in stock. The unique approach involves outsourcing the detective work to freelancers abroad.

Founders' Personal Connection

The co-founders of Medfinder, Peter Daggett and Parth Shah, both have ADHD, which inspired them to create the service. They came up with the idea after realizing the challenges of locating specific medications. Daggett and Shah jokingly discussed paying someone to help them find where they could fill an Adderall prescription, which led to the inception of Medfinder.

Since its launch in January, Medfinder has assisted thousands of individuals in locating hard-to-find medications. The service has become increasingly vital as the number of ongoing drug shortages in 2024 has reached a record high of 323, according to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

Popular Medications in Demand

Most Medfinder customers are seeking stimulants like Adderall, which have been particularly affected by shortages since 2022. Additionally, customers are looking for GLP-1 drugs used for diabetes and weight loss, such as Mounjaro, Zepbound, Wegovy, and Ozempic.

Insito Medfinder employs individuals abroad, primarily in the Philippines, through platforms like Upwork. These workers are trained to call pharmacies in the U.S. on behalf of patients to inquire about medication availability, ensuring compliance with HIPAA regulations.

Customers pay Medfinder varying fees based on the number of medications they need assistance with, ranging from $50 for one medication to $180 for six medications, per refill.

Industry Response to Shortages

Other companies are also stepping up to assist patients during these historic drug shortages. For example, Ro, a telehealth platform, recently launched its GLP-1 Supply Tracker. This tool allows patients to receive alerts when a specific drug is back in stock in their area, along with pharmacy contact information.

Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Zepbound and Mounjaro, is developing a similar tool to help patients access these crucial medications. The company's diabetes and obesity division president, Patrik Jonsson, mentioned plans to update their supply website with a heat map indicating where patients can find these drugs.

Colbert: Trump Supporters Are in a Cult

Stephen Colbert’s Take on Trump’s Vegas Rally

During a recent monologue, Stephen Colbert took the opportunity to address supporters of former President Trump who attended his rally in Las Vegas. Colbert humorously pointed out the extreme conditions at the rally, where several people had to be hospitalized due to the scorching heat.

Colbert quipped, “If you’re willing to stand out in the desert listening to some maniac ramble until your skull bursts open like a pan of jiffy pop, you’re in a cult! Or you’re at Coachella. Either way, get out of there! And take off the stupid hat!”

Trump’s Cult-Like Following

Colbert went on to highlight the concerning behavior of Trump’s supporters, suggesting that their unwavering loyalty borders on cult-like devotion. He pointed out that normal political supporters don’t cheer when a candidate openly admits to not caring about them, as Trump did at the rally.

Despite the sweltering heat and lack of shade, over a hundred Trump supporters gathered to hear their candidate speak incoherently about various topics. Rachel Maddow also noted the bizarre nature of the event, particularly how the audience struggled to follow Trump's disjointed rant.

Watching Trump's supporters endure such conditions to listen to a man who shows no genuine concern for them led many to question the true nature of their allegiance. The scene resembled a cult-like atmosphere, reinforcing the idea that Trump’s base operates more like a cult than a typical political following.

Ultimately, Colbert and Maddow’s observations shed light on the concerning dynamics at play within Trump's support base, raising important questions about the nature of political allegiance and manipulation.

The gameplay trailer teases a thrilling mission where players navigate an industrial facility on the planet LV-354, also known as Purdan. The tension builds as a tracker beeps rhythmically, signaling the presence of xenomorphs. Viewers catch glimpses of the iconic creatures, including a xenomorph and a facehugger emerging from their eerie eggs, reminiscent of the franchise's classic horror elements.

"As reverent fans of the franchise, we know that any 'Alien' video game begins and ends with its deadly xenomorphs, and those encountered within 'Alien: Rogue Incursion' are definitely ferocious, unpredictable, and terrifying," said Survios chief product officer TQ Jefferson in a PlayStation blog post.

Jefferson further explained, "Dynamically spawning and pathing with countless unique possibilities, even we couldn't tell you exactly where and when each xenomorph will strike, let alone what strategies it might use or if it'll bring some friends."

Survival Strategies

While combat is at the core of 'Alien: Rogue Incursion,' the game encourages players to think strategically. Simply blasting through every encounter may not always be the best approach. With resourceful and unpredictable xenomorphs constantly hunting the player, creativity and environmental awareness become essential tools for survival.

Prepare to face the terror as "Alien: Rogue Incursion" invades the gaming world this holiday season, offering a spine-chilling experience for fans of the iconic franchise.

U.S. Spot Bitcoin ETFs Experience Net Outflows

On June 10, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs saw net outflows of $65 million, marking the end of a 19-day streak of inflows. According to data from Farside Investors, the last day to observe net outflows across all U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs was May 10, when investors withdrew $84.7 million from the investment products.

Grayscale’s GBTC ETF experienced net outflows of nearly $40 million on June 10, with outflows now surpassing $113 million over three consecutive days. Similarly, BlackRock’s IBIT ETF witnessed a significant decline, with inflows decreasing to just $6.3 million on June 10, compared to $168.3 million on June 7.

Additionally, Invesco and Galaxy Digital’s BTCO ETF, along with Valkyrie Digital Assets’ BRRR ETF, saw outflows of $20.5 million and $15.8 million, respectively, on June 10. These outflows contrast the strong inflows seen the previous week, where BlackRock’s IBIT ETF and Fidelity’s FBTC received over $1.6 billion in total inflows, ranking them among the top 10 ETFs.

Market Response to Bitcoin's Price Movement

The outflows coincide with Bitcoin's price decline of over 3% ahead of the upcoming FOMC meeting and CPI report. The leading cryptocurrency dropped by 3.6% in the last 24 hours, reaching lows of $66,791, as reported by CoinGecko. Subsequently, Bitcoin has slightly recovered to just under $67,000.

Bitcoin derivatives traders experienced liquidations exceeding $50 million in the past day, with long positions accounting for $44.34 million of the total, according to data from Coinglass.

The European club season may be over, but soccer fans have plenty to look forward to this summer with Euro 2024. The tournament kicks off on Friday, with hosts Germany facing Scotland in Munich in the opening match. Running until July 14, Euro 2024 promises to be an exciting competition.

France: The Team to Beat

France enters Euro 2024 as the team to beat. Finishing first in Group B ahead of the Netherlands, the French squad boasts incredible depth at every position. Led by superstar Kylian Mbappé, France is a strong contender to win the tournament, having last claimed the European Championship in 2000.

England: Eager to Succeed

England, led by manager Gareth Southgate, has a talented squad highlighted by Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham. The Three Lions will be looking to make amends after their loss to Italy in the 2021 final and are eager to secure a major international title this summer.

Germany: Revitalized and Ready

Germany, the host nation, has seen a resurgence under new manager Julien Nagelsmann. With midfield maestro Toni Kroos pulling the strings, the Germans will benefit from home-field advantage as they aim to make a strong impact at Euro 2024.

Spain: A Blend of Youth and Experience

Spain, featuring a mix of exciting young talents and seasoned veterans, will look to shine in Germany. With players like Rodri anchoring the midfield, La Roja aims to deliver a standout performance after recent disappointments in major tournaments.

Portugal: Ronaldo's Last Stand?

Portugal, led by the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo, is a team to watch. Despite Ronaldo's heroics, the Portuguese squad boasts other top-level players like Ruben Dias and Bruno Fernandes. This could be Ronaldo's final chance to make an impact on the international stage.

Netherlands: Solid Defense, Lacking Attack

The Netherlands, known for their defensive prowess under coach Ronald Koeman, will rely on a strong backline at Euro 2024. However, the team faces challenges in the attack, with no player scoring more than three goals in the qualifiers.

Croatia: Banking on Experience

Croatia, led by veteran playmaker Luka Modric, has a squad filled with experience. With the likes of Josko Gvardiol in defense, Croatia will look to navigate a tough group and make an impact at the tournament.

Belgium: Transitioning to a New Era

Belgium, despite the departure of many key players from their "Golden Generation," still possesses quality in Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku. The team's young talents will need to step up, especially with questions surrounding the defense.

Mount Vesuvius Eruption: New Discoveries on Pompeii Survivors

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute
[ad_1]

The Untold Stories of Pompeii and Herculaneum Survivors

On August 24 in 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum under ash and rock. While popular belief always suggested that these cities were completely destroyed and their inhabitants perished, recent research is revealing a different narrative.

Rediscovering the Past

The story of the eruption now includes tales of survival and resilience. Archaeologists have been searching for evidence of those who escaped the disaster, shedding light on their post-eruption lives. This quest for survivors has been a focal point of recent archaeological work, aiming to uncover the human side of this tragic event.

Modern excavations have shown that not everyone in Pompeii and Herculaneum met a grim fate. The discovery of human remains that only represent a fraction of the cities' populations suggests that many inhabitants might have fled in time to survive. This challenges the traditional notion of complete annihilation.

Survival Against the Odds

Pompeii and Herculaneum were thriving cities with vibrant economies before the eruption. The recent identification of over 200 survivors in neighboring communities indicates that many managed to escape the catastrophe. These individuals, mostly from Pompeii, resettled in areas north of Mount Vesuvius, rebuilding their lives with the help of social and economic networks.

Among the survivors were families like the Caltilius and Munatius clans, who flourished in their new surroundings. They established businesses, built temples, and integrated into their adopted communities. However, not all survivors experienced such prosperity.

A Tale of Resilience

While some families thrived after the eruption, others faced hardships in their new lives. Stories of impoverished survivors like Fabia Secundina and the Avianii, Atilii, and Masuri families shed light on the challenges they encountered. Despite their struggles, these individuals showed remarkable generosity towards fellow survivors and their new communities.

Lessons from History

The Roman government played a crucial role in facilitating the recovery of the displaced populations. Emperors invested in rebuilding efforts, providing resources and infrastructure for the survivors to restart their lives. This ancient model of post-disaster recovery offers valuable lessons for modern society.

Today, as we face various challenges, the resilience and generosity displayed by the survivors of Pompeii and Herculaneum serve as a reminder of the human spirit's ability to overcome adversity.

NYC Crushes Illegal Scooters and Mopeds

Crackdown on Illegal Scooters, ATVs, and Mopeds in New York City

Illegal scooters, ATVs, and mopeds have become a significant nuisance in New York City. These vehicles are often modified to be noisy and are used inappropriately, including being ridden on sidewalks, posing a danger to pedestrians.

City officials have taken a strong stance against these illegal activities. Recently, over 200 mopeds and scooters were destroyed at Staten Island’s Fresh Kills Landfill. Mayor Eric Adams, NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell, and NYPD Commissioner Edward A. Caban were present during the event, addressing the press and highlighting the city's commitment to cracking down on these issues.

While the officials emphasized the severity of the problem, some statements may have been exaggerated. Chief of Patrol John Chell described the situation as if there were criminal gangs on mopeds roaming the city. "There’s murderers on these bikes. There are shooters on these bikes, robberies on these bikes. Reckless drivers putting our public at peril," Chell stated.

However, statistics paint a slightly different picture. In 2023, over 18,000 illegally registered mopeds and scooters were confiscated, yet only 22 robberies were reported. This year, 79 robberies have been reported so far, indicating a slight increase.

Despite the relatively low crime rate associated with these vehicles, Mayor Adams reiterated that crackdowns will continue throughout the summer. "We know that many of these scooters are used legally for commerce in our city, but far too many are illegal and unregistered. They should not be on our streets," Adams commented.

Jon Stewart Exposes Corporate America’s Fake Morality

Jon Stewart Exposes Corporate Hypocrisy During Pride Month

On a recent episode of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart took the opportunity to celebrate Pride Month by shedding light on the fake morality of corporate America. Stewart's sharp commentary highlighted the disconnect between corporate values and their true motivations.

Stewart questioned why society places importance on whether massive multinational corporations are deemed pro-gay or uphold traditional American values. He emphasized that corporations are driven solely by shareholder value, with profit being their ultimate priority.

He humorously pointed out the irony of seemingly American symbols, like the Budweiser horse, actually being owned by a Belgian-Brazilian beverage conglomerate. Stewart quipped that even brands perceived as sincere, such as Dove's commitment to body positivity, are owned by companies like Unilever, which also owns Axe body spray known for its controversial marketing.

Furthermore, Stewart criticized the superficial gestures of corporate philanthropy, highlighting how even rounding up at the checkout for charity ultimately benefits the corporation's image and bottom line.

Corporations: Profit-Driven Entities

Stewart's message was clear: corporations cannot be categorized as woke or unwoke, patriotic or unpatriotic. They are profit-seeking entities devoid of moral compass, as Stewart likened them to the fictional character Patrick Bateman from "American Psycho."

In a video segment, Stewart emphasized that corporations lack conscience, emotions, or ethical considerations. Their primary objective is to maximize profits, often at the expense of genuine social responsibility.

Stewart's commentary serves as a reminder that corporate gestures during awareness months are often superficial, aimed at maintaining profits rather than enacting meaningful change. He urged viewers not to be swayed by corporations' performative actions, highlighting that their allegiance lies with shareholders, not societal progress.

Beastly Sunspot AR3697 Unleashes Strong Solar Flares

Sunspot AR3697 Continues to Impress

The sunspot region AR3697, previously known as AR3664, has once again captured the attention of astronomers as it prepares to exit the scene. This particular sunspot gained notoriety for producing a historic geomagnetic storm back in May, which resulted in dazzling auroras visible across the globe.

On Saturday, June 8, AR3697 unleashed a powerful M9.7-class solar flare, marking the second strongest type of flare on the scale. The intensity of this flare resulted in the most potent radiation storm since 2017, as reported by NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC). Such events can jeopardize space launch operations, satellite functionality, and disrupt shortwave radio transmissions.

Solar flares, like the one observed from AR3697, are bursts of electromagnetic radiation originating from sunspots on the sun's surface. These flares are categorized into different classes (X, M, C, B, A) based on their size and strength. The recent M9.7-class flare, while 10 times weaker than X-class flares, is still 10 times stronger than C-class flares.

The event was classified as a strong (S3) on NOAA's Space Weather Scale for Solar Radiation Storms, leading to a significant radio blackout in the northern polar region. Following the solar flare, energetic protons began their journey towards Earth, causing a polar cap absorption (PCA) event similar to one seen in July 2023.

Potential Geomagnetic Storm Ahead

Furthermore, the M9.7-class flare ejected a coronal mass ejection (CME) towards Earth's outer atmosphere, potentially triggering a geomagnetic storm today. Although not expected to rival the magnitude of the May storm, NOAA's SWPC has issued a Geomagnetic Storm Watch at the G2 level. This could result in auroras visible over northern and upper Midwest states from New York to Idaho tonight.

On Monday, AR3697 unleashed an even stronger X1.5-class solar flare at 7:08 a.m. EST, leading to possible disruptions in high-frequency radio signals on Earth's sunlit side. The SWPC forecast suggests that solar activity will remain at minor to moderate levels in the coming days as AR3697 moves out of view.

The Rise of BEFE: A Memecoin Defying Market Volatility

The cryptocurrency market, known for its wild fluctuations, has a special place for memecoins. These coins are approached with caution by investors due to their unpredictable nature; they can skyrocket one day and plummet the next. However, BEFE has emerged as a rare exception, showing resilience in the face of market turbulence.

What sets BEFE apart from the rest? The coin leverages humor to foster a strong community, which, in turn, sustains its momentum in the market. Building such a dedicated crypto community is no easy feat, but BEFE has managed it remarkably well. Launched just last November 2023, the coin has already seen a remarkable 550% growth. About BEFE Coin

The growth of BEFE is not merely hype; there are several factors that make it a promising investment:

  • Differentiation from Competitors: Unlike traditional memecoins that rely on aggressive marketing, BEFE took a different approach. It was not sold during a presale and operates across multiple chains. Moreover, its zero transaction fee feature gives traders more flexibility in their transactions.
  • Community Power: With a thriving community of over 50,000 members, BEFE has solidified its position as a leading memecoin. This strong community, coupled with a unique meme concept, is crucial for the longevity and success of any memecoin. BEFE has ticked both boxes, supported by Bitgert, a platform where users stake BRISE tokens to earn BEFE rewards, showcasing the coin's growing influence in the crypto space.

BEFE’s Ambitious Vision

While BEFE is already ranked among the top 100 memecoins on Coinmarketcap and Coingecko, the team behind the coin has even greater ambitions. They aim to build an ecosystem similar to Shiba Inu and have established strategic partnerships with Sealwifhat, Gari Network, and Plantos, among others, solidifying their presence within the Solana ecosystem.

Conclusion

With its impressive growth and active trading community, BEFE presents an enticing investment opportunity. Conducting thorough research and implementing a well-thought-out strategy can facilitate the seamless integration of BEFE into a diversified crypto portfolio. Unauthorized Use of Brazilian Children's Photos in AI Tools Raises Privacy Concerns

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has issued a warning about the unauthorized use of photos of Brazilian children in AI tools, including popular image generators like Stable Diffusion. The organization's report highlighted the urgent privacy risks faced by these children, as their images are being used without consent.

An HRW researcher, Hye Jung Han, discovered that photos of Brazilian children, sourced from personal and parenting blogs, were included in the LAION-5B dataset. This dataset, compiled by the German nonprofit LAION, contains image-text pairs derived from billions of online images and captions since 2008.

Although LAION has removed the links to the children's images, HRW's report suggests that this action may not fully address the issue. There are concerns that the dataset still references personal photos of children from around the world, posing a significant privacy threat.

Risks of Non-Consensual AI-Generated Images

HRW's analysis revealed that the identities of many Brazilian children were easily traceable in the dataset due to included names and locations in image captions. This raises concerns about potential misuse of these images, especially in generating non-consensual AI clones.

At a time when students are increasingly vulnerable to online bullying and exploitation, AI tools could use these images to create explicit content. HRW's report described the captured moments from childhood as intimate and potentially exploitable.

Efforts to Address the Issue

LAION has taken down all publicly available versions of the LAION-5B dataset as a precaution following the discovery of illegal content, including instances of child sexual abuse material. The organization is working with various entities to remove references to illegal content before republishing a revised dataset.

In Brazil, reports have emerged of girls facing harassment through AI-generated deepfakes created using their social media photos. HRW emphasized the long-lasting harm such content can cause and called for urgent government action to protect children's data from AI misuse.

Stability AI, the maker of Stable Diffusion, has not yet commented on the issue. The implications of using children's photos in AI tools without consent remain a pressing concern that requires further attention and regulatory action.

Knoxville Woman’s Car Sold by Dealership

Woman's Car Sold by Dealership After Repairs

A woman in Knoxville, Tennessee found herself in a frustrating situation when a used car dealership sold her Ford Taurus after she brought it in for repairs. The car, still registered in her name, was unexpectedly taken away from her, causing significant distress.

Initial Purchase and Service Contract

Lindsey Thompson and her fiancé, Larry Cole, purchased a 2005 Ford Taurus from Cherokee Auto Sales in North Knoxville in June of 2023. They signed a service contract for 12 months or 12,000 miles, covering essential components like the drivetrain, brakes, and air conditioning. However, the car started experiencing transmission issues just a few months later.

The Unfortunate Turn of Events

After the car was towed back to Cherokee Auto Sales for repairs, Thompson and Cole were shocked to discover that their vehicle had been sold without their knowledge. Even Thompson's license plate was returned to her, adding insult to injury.

"Too many miles on the warranty," explained Thompson when she inquired about the sale. Despite her payments and commitment to the car, the dealership failed to return the vehicle to her, leading to further complications.

Months later, a notice from the State Department of Revenue revealed that the Taurus was still under Thompson's name, highlighting the dealership's negligence in handling the situation.

Seeking Resolution

Thompson is now collaborating with a legal aid attorney to explore options for reclaiming her investment or obtaining a replacement vehicle. With nearly $2,700 already invested in a car she only enjoyed for five months, Thompson is rightfully seeking justice for the unfair treatment she received.

This ongoing saga is a stark reminder of the challenges consumers face when dealing with unscrupulous practices in the automotive industry. Stay tuned for updates on how Don Dare continues to uncover the truth behind this troubling ordeal.

FBI Report: Violent Crime Down 15.2% Under Biden, Trump Oversaw Spike in Murder Rate

FBI Report Shows Decrease in Violent Crime Under Biden

A recent FBI report has revealed that violent crime in the United States has decreased by 15.2% during President Biden's administration. The Quarterly Uniform Crime Report (Q1), covering January-March 2024, compared crime trends from the same period in 2023. The data showed a significant decline in various violent crimes, including a 26.4% decrease in murder, a 25.7% decrease in rape, a 17.8% decrease in robbery, and a 12.5% decrease in aggravated assault. Additionally, reported property crime also decreased by 15.1%.

Pew Research conducted an analysis of murder rates between 2019 and 2020, indicating a 30% increase in the U.S. murder rate during that period. This surge represents the largest single-year increase in more than a century, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the FBI.

Biden's Success vs. Trump's Record

While Republicans and former President Trump often tout themselves as champions of law and order, the statistics paint a different picture. Under Biden's leadership, crime rates have decreased, contrasting with the significant spike in crime experienced during Trump's presidency. Trump's administration witnessed a rise in crime, with budget proposals that suggested cutting funding for law enforcement, creating a perception of chaos and disorder.

Despite branding himself as a "law and order" candidate, Trump's track record reveals a softer approach to crime, especially considering his past legal issues. The contrast is stark, highlighting Biden's efforts to improve public safety and reduce crime rates, ultimately making America a safer place.

“Star Trek V: The Final Frontier” Review

0

Read Time:2 Minute
[ad_1]

Exploring the Missteps of "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier"

When some of the most memorable scenes in a "Star Trek" movie aren't epic laser-blasting starship clashes, but Kirk, Spock, and Bones sitting around a campfire eating beans laced with Tennessee whiskey and singing "Row, Row, Row Your Boat," you know you might be in trouble. Oh yeah, and how can we ever unsee Uhura's naked fan dance?

"Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" holds the ignoble distinction of being perhaps the low point in that era's "Star Trek" feature film roster starring "The Original Series" crew. Its forced jokes, budget slashing nightmares, rushed reshoots, terrible special effects by Associates and Ferren, and a weird mission to meet their Maker in the middle of the galaxy have been dissected to infinity and beyond.

Harkening back to more character-driven episodes of "The Original Series," it was an ambitious, existential narrative concerning deep spiritual and philosophical ideas like the nature of life, the inevitability of death, a literal and figurative search for God, and the necessity of all sentient beings to accept and integrate all life's sorrows.

Is It Truly Deserving of Criticism?

While certainly short on action and showcasing laughable production design that often looks like something straight out of a bad high school play or micro-budget fan film, it does present some touching character moments between the "Trek" trifecta of Kirk, Spock, and Bones and relevant humanistic topics that don't seem so uncomfortable today as they might have been 35 years ago.

After the success of the lighter "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" from 1986, Paramount was anxious to get a script approved and hurried into production. Though he’d never directed, Shatner's "equal compensation" clause in his contract awarded him the directing gig due to Leonard Nimoy helming the previous films.

Sure, it all begins with a bit of silliness with Spock rescuing Kirk from a rock climbing accident on Yosemite National Park's famous El Capitan granite face and the physics-defying cartoonishness on display as they embrace and descend back down to Earth. But it doesn’t shy away from its strong spirituality notions and poignant questions of faith and self-forgiveness.

The Downfall and Reflections

Co-written by Shatner, producer Harve Bennett, and writer David Loughery, "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" was released on June 9, 1989. Shatner has been honest about the film's flaws in a recent The Hollywood Reporter interview, expressing regret for not being emotionally equipped to deal with a large motion picture.

Another aspect of the film's failure was the limited involvement of Gene Roddenberry, who was only an executive consultant. He once deemed the film "apocryphal," believing Shatner had borrowed the concept from his initial draft for "The God Thing."

Despite its shortcomings, "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" is an official member of the franchise and perhaps deserving of a rewatch in celebration of its 35th anniversary.

Don't forget the beans and the marshmallows!

Kling AI Video Generator Challenges OpenAI's Sora

OpenAI's upcoming Sora AI video generation tool has sparked both excitement and concern among creatives. However, a new contender, Kling, developed by Kuaishou, a Chinese tech giant and TikTok competitor, is generating buzz in the AI community.

Kling boasts several key advantages over its competitors. It can produce videos up to two minutes long in 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second, a significant improvement over Pika and RunwayML. This outperforms what OpenAI claimed Sora would achieve.

Kling vs. Vidu: The Chinese AI Video Battle

Kling's launch follows Vidu, another Chinese AI video tool created by Shengshu Technology and Tsinghua University. While Vidu specializes in shorter videos, it excels in creating realistic content using Universal Vision Transformer (U-ViT) technology, surpassing Runway and Pika.

On the other hand, Kling utilizes advanced 3D face and body reconstruction to generate lifelike movements based on a single full-body image. It addresses common issues in AI-generated videos, such as distorted limbs.

Realism and Physics: Kling's Strong Points

Similar to Sora, Kling excels in simulating real-world physics for accurate object interactions. It can also follow prompts effectively, creating multi-view shot sequences for dynamic videos.

Kuaishou showcased Kling's capabilities through demo videos, demonstrating superior realism and consistency compared to Runway and Pika, even rivaling Sora in some aspects.

Global Release and Accessibility

Although currently available as a public demo in China with a waitlist, Kuaishou plans a broader global release for Kling. To access the demo, users must register with a Chinese phone number on the Mandarin-language Kling website and follow steps on the official site.

For those eager to explore AI video generation now, options like Pika Labs and RunwayML, or locally Stable Video Diffusion, remain viable choices.

Connecticut Sun Extends Dominance Over Indiana Fever with 11th Consecutive Win

In a commanding performance, the Connecticut Sun secured their 11th straight victory over the Indiana Fever with a final score of 89-72. DiJonai Carrington led the Sun with a season-high 22 points, supported by DeWanna Bonner's 17-point contribution.

The Sun, boasting a remarkable 10-1 record this season, has displayed consistent superiority over the Fever, who now stand at 3-10. Connecticut's last loss to Indiana dates back to July 3, 2021, highlighting their sustained dominance in the series.

Caitlin Clark's Struggles

Despite being a standout player for the Fever, Caitlin Clark faced significant challenges in this game, scoring only 10 points on 3-of-8 shooting. Her performance was hindered further by early foul trouble, forcing her to sit out the final period, much to the disappointment of fans chanting her name.

One pivotal moment came when Carrington stole the ball and swiftly converted a layup just before halftime, extending Connecticut's lead to 55-35. The Sun continued their momentum into the third quarter, outscoring the Fever 14-6 and solidifying their dominance.

Contributions Across the Board

Alongside Carrington and Bonner, Tyasha Harris and Brionna Jones each added 11 points to the Sun's victory. Tiffany Mitchell and Alyssa Thomas also made significant impacts, with Thomas notably recording seven points, 18 rebounds, and seven assists.

For the Fever, Aliyah Boston stood out with a double-double, amassing 14 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists. Lexie Hull provided valuable support off the bench, adding 10 points to Indiana's effort.

Looking ahead, Connecticut will embark on its first two-game road trip of the season, starting with a matchup against the Chicago Sky on Wednesday.

However, the agency's notice does not constitute approval of the proposed rule change. The SEC must take action on the proposal within 45 days of its publication, with a possible extension of up to 90 days. During this period, the SEC will either approve, disapprove, or initiate further proceedings to determine the fate of the application.

Should the timeline be extended, ProShares' launch date might be delayed beyond that of its competitors. Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart has commented on the potential timing, suggesting that the ETF may not launch alongside its peers on day one. The ETF is set to be listed and traded on NYSE Arca.

Ark Invest's Exit from 21 Shares' ETF

Additionally, the SEC has approved Ark Invest's exit from 21 Shares' proposed fund. The SEC waived its standard 30-day operative delay, allowing the change to take effect immediately upon filing. This decision was based on the belief that the alteration would not significantly impact investor protection or competition.

Ark Invest and 21Shares announced their decision to part ways on May 31. While Ark Invest provided no specific reason for withdrawing from the Ethereum ETF, the firm remains involved in the spot Bitcoin ETF ARKB.

Spot ETH ETFs Still Await Launch

Although the SEC approved 19b-4 rule changes for eight spot Ethereum ETFs on May 23, the agency has not yet approved the applicants' S-1 registration statements. Consequently, the products have not been launched for trading, and there is no definitive date for the release of the various spot Ethereum ETFs.

Industry experts, such as Bloomberg's Erich Balchunas, speculate that the spot Ethereum ETFs could launch by the end of June, with a tentative date set around July 4. On the other hand, JP Morgan predicts that the funds will start trading by November.

Wall Street's Interest in Krispy Kreme

Wall Street is showing a strong appetite for Krispy Kreme, leading to a significant increase in the doughnut maker's stock value. Shares of Krispy Kreme rose to $11.35 a share following an upgraded rating and price hike fueled by its partnership with McDonald's, announced earlier this year.

The McDonald's Partnership

In March, Krispy Kreme revealed plans to offer three doughnut flavors at most of McDonald's 13,500 U.S. locations by the end of 2026. This announcement caused Krispy Kreme's stock to surge by 40%. Truist Securities has now upgraded its recommendation for Krispy Kreme from buy to hold, setting a price target of $15. The firm emphasized the potential of the partnership with McDonald's, calling it an "under-appreciated story."

Despite concerns about the impact of weight loss drugs like Ozempic on Krispy Kreme's sales, Truist remains optimistic. Analysts believe that the partnership with McDonald's will drive revenue growth for Krispy Kreme, especially with the popularity of specialty doughnuts like the Solar Eclipse and Valentine's Day pastries.

Expansion of Doughnut Dots Menu

To further capitalize on its success, Krispy Kreme announced the permanent addition of four new flavors to its Doughnut Dots menu. The new flavors - powdered, sprinkled, cinnamon, and cookie crumb - will complement the existing Original Glazed option. Customers can purchase these new flavors online or in-store in 10-count or 24-count cups.

Trump to Sit for Probation Interview, a Historic First

Former President Donald Trump, a convicted felon, is set to become the first presumptive presidential nominee to undergo a probation interview. The interview will be conducted over a secure virtual network, with the interviewer being a female probation officer, as reported by NBC News.

The probation officer may inquire about Trump's associations with individuals having criminal records, as such associations are prohibited during probation. Additionally, there might be follow-up interviews or inquiries with others residing in Trump's household. The officer will compile a report for further review.

Trump's Criminal Circle

Trump's close circle includes individuals with criminal backgrounds, raising concerns about potential probation violations. Despite his convictions, Trump has shown no remorse and is even using the probation interview for fundraising purposes, as highlighted in a tweet:

Unprecedented Situation

The upcoming probation interview with Trump, a major party nominee, should not be normalized. With 34 felony convictions, Trump's legal troubles are far from ordinary. Voters need to recognize the significance of this event and the alternative presented by non-felon candidate Joe Biden in the 2024 election.

New study questions existence of liquid water on Mars

Mars' Mysterious Radar Reflections

A recent study has raised doubts about the existence of a subglacial lake of liquid water beneath Mars' southern ice cap. The study suggests that densely compacted layers of ice could be responsible for radar reflections previously interpreted as liquid water.

Previous Discoveries

In 2018, the Mars Express orbiter of the European Space Agency detected what seemed to be a 20-kilometer-wide lake buried under 1.5 km of ice in the Planum Australe region of Mars. Subsequent findings indicated the presence of multiple potential lakes, challenging scientists to explain how liquid water could exist on the red planet.

One theory proposed that briny water, kept liquid by calcium and magnesium perchlorate, could be present near the base of the southern ice cap. These compounds, found on Mars by NASA's Phoenix mission in 2008, lower the freezing point of water to levels compatible with Mars' conditions.

New Explanations

A team from Cornell University has now suggested an alternative interpretation of the radar echoes detected by the Mars Express orbiter. By running simulations, the researchers showed that densely packed ice layers, crushed under the weight of the ice sheet, could produce similar radar reflections to those expected from a subglacial lake.

The simulations revealed that the radar waves bouncing off these compacted ice layers could create bright reflections, mimicking the signals previously attributed to liquid water. This phenomenon, known as "constructive interference," occurs when radar echoes from multiple layers overlap and amplify each other.

Scientific Debate

Despite these findings, the debate about the existence of a subglacial lake on Mars continues. While the radar reflections could be explained by compacted ice layers, the possibility of liquid water still intrigues many scientists. The study, published in Science Advances, provides a compelling argument but does not definitively rule out the presence of liquid water.

As researchers strive to unravel the mysteries of Mars' polar regions, the quest for understanding the planet's geological history and potential for life remains a top priority in planetary science.

OKX and Binance Users Hit by Crypto Hacks

OKX's SMS Notification Safety Feature Compromised

OKX, a prominent cryptocurrency exchange, recently faced a security breach where a miscreant managed to siphon off crypto amounts from users by exploiting the platform's SMS notification safety feature. This incident left several users in a state of distress.

The company is currently delving deep into the matter to understand the full extent of the breach and has assured its users that they will be fully compensated for any losses incurred.

Details of the Breach

According to SlowMist, a blockchain security firm, reports started surfacing when two victims disclosed that their OKX exchange accounts had been compromised. In both cases, the users received suspicious SMS notifications originating from Hong Kong, prompting them to authorize withdrawals and trades.

Interestingly, a similar incident occurred earlier in the week on Binance, another leading cryptocurrency exchange. A user fell victim to a similar scheme and lost approximately $1 million worth of crypto due to a cross-trading plugin.

SlowMist's monitoring division, MistTrack, is actively tracking the wallet addresses associated with the hackers involved in both breaches to identify any patterns or connections.

Investigation and Assurance

Although the victims in these cases had not activated Google Authenticator for added security, it is unlikely that this alone facilitated the hacks. OKX has released a statement reassuring users that they are conducting a thorough investigation to uncover the truth behind the breaches.

The exchange has pledged to provide updates on the situation and has promised full compensation to affected users if any fault is found on their platform. They have urged the community to refrain from spreading unfounded rumors to prevent further escalation of the issue.

In the Binance breach, the hacker employed a sophisticated strategy to evade detection. By manipulating his account with web cookies and executing high-volume trades in the USDT trading pair, the miscreant artificially increased liquidity. Additionally, the hacker placed limited sell orders at inflated prices in illiquid pairs, which contributed to his success.

Apple and OpenAI Announce Partnership with Advanced AI Plans

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute
[ad_1]

Apple's New Partnership with OpenAI Promises Advanced AI Capabilities

Apple unveiled a new partnership with OpenAI at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) today, promising to bring advanced artificial intelligence capabilities to the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. While this move solidifies Apple's commitment to AI, it also highlights a growing distance between Microsoft and its once close partner, OpenAI.

Microsoft's Expanding AI Initiatives

Over the past year, Microsoft has been aggressively expanding its AI partnerships and initiatives well beyond OpenAI. The tech giant has inked multi-billion dollar deals with Hitachi to co-develop industry-specific AI solutions, with Mistral to create next-generation natural language models, and with other firms to explore AI applications in various sectors.

Microsoft is also investing staggering sums to train its own AI models in-house. The crown jewel is reported LLM named “MAI-1” built to directly compete with OpenAI’s language models. This diversification signals Microsoft's refusal to be solely dependent on OpenAI for its AI ambitions.

OpenAI's Power Struggle and Strategic Shift

Microsoft's AI diversification seems to have been precipitated by a quiet power struggle and leadership shakeup at OpenAI last year. Co-founder and CEO Sam Altman was abruptly ousted, leading to the departure of key researchers like Ilya Sutskever amid reports of a toxic company culture.

The changing dynamics between Microsoft and OpenAI suggest a shift in their relationship. While the two companies still collaborate closely on specific projects, the once unshakable partnership is starting to show signs of strain.

OpenAI-Apple Partnership: A Game-Changer?

The blockbuster OpenAI-Apple partnership announced today aims to integrate OpenAI's technology into Apple's ecosystem, enhancing Siri and other services. For Apple, this deal represents a significant step in bolstering its AI capabilities and catching up with rivals like Google and Amazon.

However, to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, the partnership presents an opportunity to leverage OpenAI's influence within Apple and potentially benefit indirectly from the data insights gained. This move could help Microsoft ensure its AI efforts align with those of Apple and maintain a competitive edge in the AI landscape.

Apple's AI Evolution

Apple's embrace of AI via the OpenAI partnership marks a significant shift in its strategy. Despite previous shortcomings with Siri, Apple is now actively investing in AI to enhance its products and services. The partnership, while promising, also raises questions about data privacy and compatibility between the two companies' cultures.

As the AI arms race intensifies in Silicon Valley, all eyes are on Microsoft to see how it will respond to Apple's latest move and further solidify its position as a leader in AI technology.

Blue Bird: The Unexpected Leader in EV Stocks

While many electric vehicle manufacturers have been experiencing a decline in their stock prices in the first half of 2024, one company stands out for its exceptional performance. Blue Bird, a school bus manufacturer, has defied expectations and seen a significant increase in its stock value.

Thanks to a $5 billion government incentive program aimed at promoting electric vehicles, Blue Bird has managed to secure a 500-unit backlog. In the first quarter alone, the company sold 210 electric school buses, highlighting the growing demand for eco-friendly transportation solutions.

The Rise of Electric School Buses

Electric school buses have proven to be a smart investment for school districts across the country. With a predictable daily route and long periods of inactivity, these buses are ideal candidates for electrification. By transitioning to electric buses, school districts can save on fuel and maintenance costs, leading to long-term financial benefits.

"This is an entirely different revenue and gross margin structure compared with just a year ago with bus prices up significantly," said Blue Bird CEO Phil Horlock.

Analysts predict continued growth in the electric school bus sector, as school districts recognize the economic and environmental advantages of switching to electric vehicles. While the initial purchase price of electric buses may be higher than traditional diesel buses, the long-term savings make them a compelling choice for cash-strapped districts.

Benefits for Education and the Environment

By investing in electric school buses, districts can redirect funds previously spent on fuel towards improving infrastructure and educational resources. Moreover, the switch to electric buses can contribute to cleaner air and reduced carbon emissions, creating a healthier environment for students and communities.

Overall, Blue Bird's success in the electric vehicle market demonstrates the potential for sustainable transportation solutions to drive positive change in both the economy and the environment.

Trump’s Polling Lead Vanishes as Democrats Activate

Read Time:1 Minute
[ad_1]

Trump's Conviction Sparks Democratic Voter Activation

Following Trump's conviction, more Democratic voters have been mobilized against him, leading to the ex-president's polling lead vanishing in the latest CBS News Poll.

According to the CBS News Poll, Biden and Trump are now essentially tied in both the national popular vote and battleground states. Trump leads the popular vote by 50%-49%, while Biden leads in the battleground states by the same margin.

Anti-Trump Sentiment Drives Biden Support

Interestingly, more Joe Biden voters seem to have been activated out of opposition to Trump. The current voting trend shows that Biden's support is increasingly centered around anti-Trump sentiment rather than a strong affinity for Biden himself. Today, the majority of Biden's supporters state that their main rationale for voting is to oppose Trump, a significant increase from March.

The sustainability of this dynamic remains a central question in the campaign. With likely voter preference almost evenly split nationally and across battleground states, every voter's decision becomes crucial.

Uncertain Polling Dynamics

While polling numbers should be taken with caution due to their current unreliability, the evident shift in momentum towards Biden is undeniable. All polls indicate a growing momentum for the incumbent.

The key to this election lies in Democratic voter turnout. If Democrats rally behind Biden as they have since 2017, his chances of securing a second term are promising. On the other hand, Trump is banking on a low Democratic turnout to secure victory.

Trump's Limited Voter Base

Donald Trump's support base is not expanding, relying primarily on his loyal MAGA followers. For Trump to win, he needs Democrats to stay home, a risky strategy given the anti-Trump sentiment driving many Democrats to the polls.

Trump's presence seems to galvanize Democratic voters against him. The more they see of Trump, the more determined they are to vote against him. If Trump falters in the upcoming debate, the momentum is likely to further shift in Biden's favor.

Oldest Carbon Ever Seen Discovered by James Webb Space Telescope

0

Read Time:2 Minute
[ad_1]

Discovery of the Most Distant Carbon in the Universe

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has made a groundbreaking discovery by detecting the most distant carbon ever seen. This carbon was found in a galaxy that existed just 350 million years after the Big Bang, making it the oldest carbon known to astronomers.

What makes this detection even more remarkable is that it is the first time an element heavier than hydrogen or helium, known as "metals" in astronomical terms, has been confirmed in the very early universe. Previous research had suggested that carbon formation began about one billion years after the Big Bang. However, the current discovery challenges this idea, indicating that carbon might have formed much earlier, possibly making it the oldest metal of all.

Roberto Maiolino, from the Kavli Institute of Astronomy at the University of Cambridge in England, expressed his surprise at the findings. "We were surprised to see carbon so early in the universe, since it was thought that the earliest stars produced much more oxygen than carbon," said Maiolino. This discovery suggests that the very first stars may have operated differently than previously believed.

Implications of the Discovery

The presence of carbon in the early universe has significant implications for cosmic chemistry. Carbon is essential for the formation of cosmic dust grains, which play a crucial role in building larger celestial bodies like asteroids, planetesimals, and planets. In fact, Earth itself is believed to have been assembled mostly from carbonaceous objects. Moreover, carbon is a fundamental building block of life as we know it.

Studying the earliest stars, which are composed only of primordial elements like hydrogen and helium, provides valuable insights into the chemical evolution of the universe. By understanding how and when the first metals formed inside stars, scientists can establish a timeline for the processes that eventually led to the emergence of life.

Francesco D'Eugenio, who led the research on the galaxy GS-z12 where the carbon was detected, described the galaxy as an "embryo" of a galaxy that could evolve into a structure comparable in size to our Milky Way. The compact, low-mass galaxy is relatively massive for its early time frame, indicating a period when galaxies were small but growing rapidly.

While carbon was the only confirmed metal found in GS-z12, the JWST also detected hints of oxygen and neon in the galaxy. Further observations are needed to validate the presence of these elements. Additionally, astronomers using the JWST have identified a galaxy at an even higher redshift, possibly containing oxygen, which could set a new record for the earliest heavy element detection.

The discovery of carbon in the early universe opens up new possibilities for understanding the formation of planets and the potential for life to emerge in the cosmos. This groundbreaking finding will be detailed in an upcoming issue of Astronomy & Astrophysics, with a preview of the paper available here.

Roaring Kitty Sparks Speculation on AMC Ownership

Roaring Kitty, the infamous GameStop bull, has once again stirred up speculation with his recent social media activity. After posting a single tweet last week, returning to Reddit, and hosting a livestream, Keith Gill, also known as Roaring Kitty or DeepFuckingValue, has some internet detectives convinced that he might also hold stock in AMC.

Gill gained notoriety during the GameStop short squeeze in 2021, and his communication style, often filled with movie references, has now caught the attention of AMC investors. In his latest post, he shared a screenshot from the movie "The Dark Knight," featuring Heath Ledger's Joker character holding a kitten mask before a bank robbery.

Some eagle-eyed Twitter users have pointed out what they believe are hidden messages within the image. The number five on the mask has led some to speculate about AMC's stock price, which currently hovers around $5. Others claim to see the letters "AMC" on the mask, fueling further speculation.

Despite efforts to decode the image, the original photo of the kitten has been uncovered, debunking theories of hidden messages. However, the belief that Roaring Kitty may have a stake in AMC persists.

Market Reactions

On Friday morning, AMC opened at $5.30, experiencing a 7.4% drop to $4.91 by market close. Meanwhile, GameStop opened at $37.69 but plummeted 25% to $28.22 following a disappointing Q1 report and Roaring Kitty's livestream. In pre-market trading, GME has rebounded by 5% to $29.59.

Gill's return to social media last week, marked by revealing his substantial GameStop positions, generated significant buzz. Despite speculation that he could become a GameStop billionaire during his livestream, the early release of the company's Q1 report led to a 30% crash in GME's stock price. Nonetheless, over 700,000 viewers tuned in as the price fell, highlighting the enduring influence of the meme stock influencer.

[ad_1]

Year 2 of the PWHL: What to Expect from the 2024 Draft

After the successful conclusion of the inaugural PWHL season that saw Minnesota crowned as the first-ever champion, all eyes are now on the upcoming draft. The league's six teams are gearing up to welcome a new crop of players into the pros at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in Saint Paul, Minn., on Monday, starting at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT and running seven rounds deep.

Key Details for the 2024 PWHL Draft

New York will have the honor of selecting first overall in the draft. The draft order is determined by the league standings after the regular season, with playoff results not taken into account. The PWHL also employs a "Draft Order Points" system that rewards teams for wins after their playoff elimination. Unlike last year, this draft will feature the same order through all seven rounds.

The draft order for the first round is as follows:

  • New York
  • Ottawa
  • Minnesota
  • Boston
  • Montreal
  • Toronto

A total of 167 players are eligible for selection by the PWHL teams. This pool includes 93 forwards, 48 defenders, and 26 goaltenders. All players declared for the draft by the May 8 deadline are now eagerly waiting for their names to be called.

The NCAA plays a significant role in this year's draft class. Over half of the eligible players come from college programs, with 61 having played NCAA hockey in the U.S. and 35 representing U Sports squads in Canada. Additionally, 55 players bring professional experience from overseas leagues.

Top Prospects and Global Representation

Sarah Fillier is expected to be the first overall pick. The dynamic playmaker and Team Canada star has been a standout throughout her career. However, her teammate Danielle Serdachny, along with other top prospects like Hannah Bilka and Claire Thompson, are also poised to make an impact.

The 2024 draft class features players from 19 different nations. While Canadian and American talent remains prominent, the draft reflects the global growth of women's hockey. Players from Europe, including Switzerland, Sweden, and Russia, are making their mark on the PWHL.

Six Intriguing Draft-Eligible Players

With a deep talent pool, the 2024 draft promises excitement and potential. Here are six players to watch:

Amanda Kessel, F, Team USA: The seasoned player brings a wealth of experience and could be a wildcard pick.

Daniela Pejšová, D, Luleå HF (SDHL): The young defenseman from Czechia is a rising international star.

Noora Tulus, F, Luleå HF (SDHL): A veteran scorer from Sweden, Tulus is ready for a new challenge in the PWHL.

Julia Gosling, F, St. Lawrence University (NCAA) and Team Canada: The power forward is forgoing her NCAA eligibility to turn pro and is expected to be a top pick.

Abby Boreen, F, PWHL Minnesota: Boreen's unique path to the draft includes a championship with Minnesota and a focus on full-time hockey.

Gwyneth Philips, G, Northeastern University (NCAA): The standout goaltender boasts impressive stats and is a top prospect despite the competitive goalie landscape in the league.

Biden administration’s push to lower healthcare costs

[ad_1]

Biden Administration's Efforts to Lower Healthcare Costs

Since taking office, the Biden administration has made lowering healthcare costs a top priority. As the first term draws to a close, experts, industry analysts, and government regulators have been assessing the impact of federal policies on the healthcare industry, particularly those aimed at reducing drug prices.

FTC's Crackdown on Drug Patent Listings

One of the most significant challenges to high drug prices has come from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which has been cracking down on improper drug patent listings. Additionally, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) are expected to announce prices for the first ten drugs participating in Medicare negotiations later this year. These initiatives have elicited mixed responses from the industry.

Last year, the administration directed the FTC, the Department of Justice (DOJ), and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to collaborate in combating high healthcare and drug costs while promoting competition. An FTC official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated, "We have been closely working among the agencies to lower prices for Americans."

This collaborative effort involves comparing data and tools to strengthen the enforcement of existing rules. For instance, the FTC is using CMS data to identify healthcare transactions by private-equity firms that may not have been reported to antitrust regulators, resulting in a reduction of private equity acquisitions in the healthcare sector.

FTC Challenges Junk Drug Patent Listings

In a move to promote generic competition, the FTC recently challenged "junk" patents listed in the FDA's Orange Book for the second time in two years. The agency argued that inaccurate listings can delay the entry of more affordable generic alternatives, thus keeping drug prices artificially high.

The FTC strategically targeted listings for asthma and inhaler medications with expired underlying patents, prompting delistings and cost commitments from various pharmaceutical companies. In a subsequent round of challenges, the commission disputed secondary patents for diabetes, weight loss, and asthma medications, paving the way for future generics.

Melissa Wasserman, a drug patent law expert at the University of Texas, Austin, praised the FTC's actions, stating, "Those patents listed in the Orange Book can have a blocking effect, preventing generics from entering the market."

Medicare Price Negotiations Pose a Greater Threat

Another significant challenge to high drug prices is forthcoming from the federal government through CMS' Medicare price negotiations. The Inflation Reduction Act, passed in 2022, allows CMS to negotiate prices for brand-name drugs comprising a significant portion of Medicare's spending.

The first ten drugs under negotiation are expected to have prices finalized by August, with the negotiated prices taking effect in 2026. Analysts believe that this policy poses a more substantial threat to the industry than the FTC's challenges. Small molecule drugs become eligible for negotiation after nine years on the market, while biologics become eligible after 13 years.

Experts anticipate aggressive price cuts in the first round of negotiations, especially during an election year. While the impact on drug sales remains uncertain, the industry is bracing for significant changes. Matt Phipps, a biotech analyst, noted, "The Inflation Reduction Act will apply pressure on drug prices earlier than generic competition would."

The Biden Campaign Highlights Trump's Criminal Past

The Biden campaign is emphasizing the stark differences between President Biden and former President Trump, particularly in terms of character. A key point being reiterated is that Trump is not only a convicted felon but was also labeled a rapist in a civil case.

Biden-Harris campaign co-chair Mitch Landrieu recently spoke about the importance of defending democracy against autocracy, highlighting Trump's actions that have put democracy at risk both domestically and internationally.

Landrieu stated, "This election is a real decision between autocracy and democracy, and it's crucial to remember that Donald Trump is now a convicted criminal, a sexual abuser, and a rapist, as declared by a court."

An Inspiring Initiative to Spark Interest in STEM

An illuminating new program has stargazers and science educators aglow with inspiration. That program, called Stellar Dreams, is run by the nonprofit organization The Science Haven. It aims to give away 100 telescopes to underrepresented and underprivileged families to foster interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).

Founded by molecular biologist Raven Baxter, The Science Haven is committed to creating an inclusive space for diverse science dialogues and fostering connections between different communities. Through various events, educational programs, web series, workshops, and public discussions, The Science Haven strives to make science more accessible and create inclusive environments for sharing perspectives.

Empowering Young Minds with Stellar Dreams

Stellar Dreams is The Science Haven's latest project, designed to spark curiosity by providing 100 beginner-friendly Celestron telescopes to disadvantaged students in grades 5 to 12 and their families across America. The initiative began with a recent rollout in Buffalo, New York.

Aside from donating telescopes, Stellar Dreams offers participants the opportunity to join a junior astronomer training program. This program teaches them how to use the telescopes effectively and provides information about free citizen science research in astronomy.

Executive director Raven Baxter and NASA astrophysicist Gamble lead the Stellar Dreams program, which has garnered global attention for its innovative outreach efforts. The duo was recently honored with an Astronaut Rock Star Award by Uniphi Good for their contributions to space exploration and STEM/STEAM education.

"The genesis of the Stellar Dreams Program was really a small seed that just grew and grew," said Baxter. "To go from a simple idea last July to a successful and award-winning project within six to nine months is a huge accomplishment. I’m extremely honored and grateful for the support behind Stellar Dreams."

Gamble, the program's director, emphasized the importance of early access to tools like telescopes in fostering an interest in STEM. "I know they want these types of telescopes and they want to be able to look at these things in the night sky and have access to the local astronomy community," he said.

Building Bright Futures Through Astronomy

Stellar Dreams has provided 100 telescopes to students in Buffalo, but they are still fundraising for programming costs to expand the initiative to other cities.

"We're looking to continue this program in other cities in the D.C area and North Carolina," Baxter mentioned. "I'm sort of a hometown hero, and it felt really good to give back to the community that invested so much into me."

Recipients of Stellar Dreams receive a Celestron Travel Scope 80 telescope, complete with a phone mount for capturing images, a startracker app, and a laser starfinder tool. This comprehensive kit aims to engage students and their families in astronomy.

For more information on the Stellar Dreams Project, partnership opportunities, and how to donate to this worthy cause, visit them at their online headquarters.

Baby Boomers Key to Crypto Market Growth

[ad_1]

The Rise of Baby Boomers in the Crypto Market

The cryptocurrency market has reached a staggering market cap of around $2.54 trillion, with baby boomers emerging as a key player in driving further growth. In the US alone, baby boomers hold approximately $68 trillion in assets, making them a significant force in the financial world.

While the crypto sphere has been largely dominated by millennials, GenX, and GenZ, baby boomers are now starting to take notice. This shift comes at a time when the Bitcoin ETF has reached a value of $15 billion by June 2024, showcasing the increasing interest in digital assets among older investors. ETFs have been instrumental in allowing traders and investors to diversify their portfolios without directly owning Bitcoin ($BTC).

The Diversification Trend Among Baby Boomers

Baby boomers, known for their traditional investment preferences in equities and real estate, are now showing interest in the crypto industry. The potential for growth and undervaluation in the market is attracting their attention, prompting many to consider diversifying their holdings.

As more baby boomers explore the crypto market, various investment strategies, price fluctuations, and increased stability are expected. Some investors are looking to allocate between 1-5% of their portfolio to crypto, depending on their risk tolerance and interest in diversification opportunities.

While exchange platforms are popular among younger investors, baby boomers may opt for banks and asset managers to facilitate their crypto investments. These traditional institutions offer a level of security and diversification that appeals to older demographics.

The Future of Crypto Investments for Baby Boomers

Entering the crypto market requires thorough research and risk assessment, especially for baby boomers who are new to digital assets. Bitcoin and Ethereum ($ETH) are attracting significant attention due to their increasing value, widespread adoption, and promising future.

Bitcoin already has its own ETF in the US, while Ethereum is working towards launching one soon. The approval of a Spot Ether ETF could attract more capital from institutional and retail investors, further boosting the crypto market.

Compared to younger investors, baby boomers approach investing with caution, spending time researching different aspects of a project before committing. Their financial stability allows for strategic investments that could benefit the overall value of cryptocurrencies, including meme coins.

While meme coins are often influenced by social media trends, baby boomers' investment decisions are typically based on fundamental analysis rather than online hype. The presence of more crypto ETFs could provide them with additional opportunities to diversify their portfolios and participate in the digital asset market.

Luke Shaw Admits Regret Over Playing Injured

Luke Shaw Admits Regret Over Playing Injured

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has candidly expressed that he regrets playing in their game against Luton Town back in February while nursing a hamstring injury. Shaw is now racing against time to regain full fitness for England's opening match of the European Championship against Serbia on June 16.

England manager Gareth Southgate recently acknowledged the risk involved in selecting Shaw for the squad, describing it as a "gamble." Despite being with United for a decade, the 28-year-old faced criticism from fans who questioned his commitment to the club after being chosen for the England squad following only 15 appearances for United last season.

"If the manager asks me to play, I'm never going to say 'no.' But I shouldn't have played [at Luton]," Shaw reflected. "It's kind of everyone's fault. Partly my fault, partly the [United] medical staff. I came back too quickly and ended up with another hamstring injury... I did everything I could to be fit for United."

Regarding his availability for the match against Serbia, Shaw emphasized, "That's not really down to me. We just go day by day, see how I'm feeling in training. I would love to make the first game, but I don't want to rush because realistically I've only got one chance. If I feel something, then that's it. I don't want that to happen."

Reflecting on England's recent 1-0 defeat to Iceland in their final Euros warm-up game, Shaw suggested that the loss could serve as a wake-up call for the team. "This could have been the best thing to happen to us," he remarked. "It made us realize that going to Germany is not going to be an easy ride. It's going to require a lot of determination from the team to succeed."

Polestar Unveils its First SUV, the Polestar 3

In 2024, Polestar, the electric performance brand spun out of Volvo, is making waves with the introduction of its first SUV, the Polestar 3. Priced at $73,400, this vehicle marks a significant milestone for the company, which previously released the Polestar 1, a limited-production plug-in hybrid, and the Polestar 2, a compact sedan known for its deep integration with Google's automotive services.

Despite Volvo selling its shares in Polestar, the two companies will maintain a close relationship, sharing technology and platforms. The Polestar 3 is built on the SPA2 architecture, also utilized by Volvo's upcoming EX90, with both models scheduled for production at Volvo's South Carolina factory this year.

One remarkable achievement for Polestar is the reduced carbon emissions during the production of the Polestar 3 compared to the Polestar 2, demonstrating the brand's commitment to sustainability.

Power and Performance

At launch, customers can choose from two configurations of the Polestar 3. The long-range dual motor variant boasts a combined output of 489 hp and 620 lb-ft of torque, drawing power from a 111 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This setup provides an impressive EPA range of 315 miles and supports fast charging, with a 30-minute charge from 10% to 80% at up to 250 kW.

For an additional $6,000, buyers can opt for the Performance Pack, increasing power to 517 hp and 671 lb-ft of torque. This enhancement decreases the 0-62 mph time to 4.7 seconds, albeit with a slightly reduced range of 279 miles due to the higher power output and larger wheels.

Later this year, a long-range single-motor version of the Polestar 3 is expected to be released, offering even more options to potential buyers.

Interior and Features

The Polestar 3 features a minimalist main instrument display for the driver and a sleek infotainment UI. It also offers a spacious interior, with ample legroom and headroom for passengers. Additionally, the vehicle includes a 1.1 cubic foot frunk and 17.1 cubic feet of storage space in the rear seats, expandable to 48.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.

Customer deliveries are set to begin soon, with US-made models projected to arrive later this year. Overall, the Polestar 3 represents a significant step forward for the brand, offering a compelling electric SUV option in a competitive market.

General Motors Partners with Costco to Boost EV Sales

General Motors (GM) is looking to Costco as a key partner in increasing its electric vehicle (EV) sales. The automaker has identified the retailer’s Auto Program as a strategic avenue for growth in this sector.

Marissa West, GM’s North America president, expressed her confidence in the collaboration during an interview with CNBC. She emphasized the significant opportunities that Costco presents for expanding GM’s EV portfolio.

Costco’s Auto Program: A Gateway to Car Sales

While Costco’s member-exclusive Auto Program does not directly sell vehicles, it serves as a facilitator connecting consumers with dealerships to purchase new and pre-owned cars. Partnering with companies like GMC and Volvo, the program offers deals, incentives, and access to both traditional gas-powered cars and EV models.

Currently, Costco members can benefit from a $1,000 incentive when leasing or buying a new 2023 or 2024 Chevrolet model. This promotion includes GM’s Chevrolet Blazer EV and Chevrolet Equinox EV, and it is set to expire on July 31.

Driving EV Adoption through Partnerships

With the automotive industry racing to meet the growing demand for EVs, GM’s alliance with Costco could give it a competitive edge. While specific sales figures through the program have not been disclosed, Costco’s Auto Program has historically facilitated around 500,000 car sales annually.

According to Jay Maxwell, a Costco Auto Program general manager, the retailer’s vast membership base of over 70 million households represents a prime demographic for EV adoption. Maxwell highlighted that Costco provides a platform for automakers to showcase their EVs to an audience eager for innovation.

Costco’s appeal to high-earning consumers, with a significant portion making over $125,000 annually, aligns well with GM’s push into the EV market. This partnership could not only drive sales for GM but also accelerate the overall adoption of EVs among consumers.

Donald Trump's Controversial Remarks in Las Vegas

In a recent event in Las Vegas, former President Donald Trump tried to refute confirmed reports that he called fallen troops "suckers and losers." Despite the evidence, Trump vehemently denied the allegations, claiming they were fabricated by a failing magazine.

Trump's Defense

During his speech, Trump stated, "I stood over graves of soldiers and I said, these people are suckers and losers, think dead soldiers from World War One." He went on to criticize the media for spreading what he called "phony stories" similar to the Russia investigation.

Response from Former Chief of Staff

Former Trump White House Chief of Staff John Kelly later confirmed the reports, expressing his disappointment in Trump's disrespectful remarks towards military personnel. Kelly's statement shed light on Trump's history of controversial behavior towards the armed forces.

Trump's Attempt to Rewrite History

Despite the evidence against him, Trump continues to deny the allegations, blaming Democrats for the negative publicity. This recent outburst came after President Biden's successful D-Day anniversary trip, where Biden honored fallen soldiers in France.

Damage Control

Observers noted that Trump's audience appeared disengaged during his speech, signaling a lack of support for his attempts to downplay the controversy. Trump's refusal to acknowledge his past actions reflects a concerning pattern of behavior.
