The Intriguing Saga Behind the Success of “3 Body Problem”

Netflix’s hit show, “3 Body Problem,” has captivated a global audience, amassing a staggering 11 million views in its first four days. Fans eagerly await the potential answers to the myriad of questions left unanswered in the first season. However, beyond the on-screen drama lies a real-life tale that is as shocking and enthralling as the series itself.

A True-Crime Story Fit for Netflix

Reported in the prestigious New York Times, the narrative surrounding the show unfolds like a plot from a true-crime documentary. Lin Qi, a 39-year-old billionaire and the visionary behind gaming company Yoozoo who had secured the film rights to Liu Cixin’s acclaimed novel “The Three-Body Problem,” met a tragic end. Lin was murdered in 2020 by Xu Yao, a former executive at his company, who was recently sentenced to death by a court in Shanghai for the heinous act.

The case, described by a Chinese news outlet as “as bizarre as a Hollywood blockbuster,” involves themes of deadly corporate rivalry and macabre ambition. Xu, a lawyer with Yoozoo since 2017 and responsible for managing the “Three-Body Problem” rights, harbored resentment after a demotion, leading him down a dark path.

The Terrifying Unraveling of Events

Turning to the dark web, Xu conducted dangerous experiments, reminiscent of a character from the popular TV series “Breaking Bad.” He tested lethal poisons on animals before escalating to human targets. Between September and December 2020, reports indicate that Xu spiked beverages with methylmercury chloride, including coffee and whiskey consumed at the office. Despite his arrest, Xu refused to confess or disclose the poison used, complicating efforts to save Lin’s life. Shockingly, not only did Xu take Lin’s life, but he also targeted four other colleagues along with his own replacement, demonstrating the extent of his malicious intent.

Reactions and Insights

While Netflix declined to comment on this shocking tale, co-creator of “3 Body Problem,” David Benioff, known for his work on “Game of Thrones,” shared his perspective. Reflecting on the unexpected turn of events, Benioff stated, “When you work in this business, you’re expecting all sorts of issues to arise. Somebody poisoning the boss is not generally one of them.”

Before Netflix’s involvement, Amazon Studios was set to produce “The Three-Body Problem” in 2018, a deal that fell through due to alleged challenges with Lin’s behavior. An anonymous insider revealed the tense atmosphere within Yoozoo, hinting at underlying tensions that culminated in Lin’s tragic demise.

The narrative surrounding “3 Body Problem” transcends the screen, underscoring the unsettling reality that sometimes, the most chilling dramas unfold behind closed doors.
