A16z Games Speedrun Accelerator Opens Applications for Third Class
A16z recently announced the opening of applications for the third class of its Speedrun tech and games accelerator. This program, which has a $75 million accelerator fund, aims to support and invest in promising early-stage startups in the gaming industry. The accelerator will be moving its location from San Francisco to Los Angeles for this iteration.
Increased Investment and Support
The A16z Games Speedrun accelerator is committed to investing up to $75 million in selected startups, with an investment of $750,000 in each company. The program offers a 12-week intensive training program for game and tech entrepreneurs, culminating in a Demo Day during SF Tech Week. This opportunity provides not only financial support but also access to a team of operators and partners with extensive experience in the games industry.
Testimonials and Success Stories
Josh Lu, investing partner for A16z Games, highlighted the impact of the Speedrun program on founders, emphasizing that venture capital can be a viable path for funding games startups. The success of previous cohorts, like SR002, which saw over 370 investors in attendance at Demo Day, underscores the value of the program.
“It has been inspiring and impressive to see what the Speedrun founders have been able to accomplish in such a short period of time, and we’re eager to see what ideas and products come out of SR003.”
Diverse Selection and Verticals
The SR002 class featured a diverse range of companies disrupting the tech and games industry across various verticals. These included infrastructure and tools, games studios, consumer apps/platforms, and AI innovations. The program is highly selective, with only 1% of applicants accepted into the cohort.
- 43% of companies focused on infrastructure and tools, with professionals from top tech companies like Discord, Zynga, and Google.
- 35% were games studios, founded by newcomers and veterans in the industry.
- 25% worked on consumer apps/platforms, creating safe spaces for players online.
- 49% focused on AI, led by experts with PhDs from prestigious institutions.
