President Biden Calls for Regulation of AI Voice Cloning
President Joseph R. Biden made a notable reference to artificial intelligence (AI) in his recent State of the Union address. During the speech, which was broadcast live on March 7, 2024, Biden urged lawmakers to take action on AI-related issues.
According to the complete transcript of the address published by CBS News, Biden specifically called for bipartisan privacy legislation to safeguard children online and emphasized the importance of harnessing the benefits of AI while mitigating its potential risks.
Focus on A.I. Voice Impersonation
One of the key points mentioned by Biden was the need to ban A.I. voice impersonation. This is a critical area where generative AI technology is currently being employed, with both proprietary solutions like ElevenLabs and open-source options such as myShell already available in the market.
It is worth noting that Biden’s interest in this topic stems from a recent incident in New Hampshire, where his voice was replicated in robocalls urging voters not to participate in the primary election. The New Hampshire Attorney General enlisted the help of the Industry Traceback Group to identify the origin of the calls, leading to companies like Life Corporation and its owner Walter Monk, as well as Lingo Telecom, being implicated. In response, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued a cease-and-desist letter to Lingo Telecom.
Following Biden’s address, there is speculation about the future of companies like ElevenLabs and myShell that provide AI voice cloning solutions. Additionally, there is uncertainty surrounding whether Congress will introduce legislation to prohibit this technology.
