Arizona Coyotes Season Comes to an End
As the Arizona Coyotes prepare to play their final game of the season, uncertainties loom over the team’s future in Arizona with rumors abound about a potential move to Salt Lake City.
NHL Franchise Relocation
During the pre-game build-up to their match against the Edmonton Oilers, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet disclosed that a pivotal Board of Governors meeting is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET on Thursday to finalize the sale of the Coyotes to Utah.
Although the NHL has yet to officially confirm the relocation, prospective owner Ryan Smith expressed confidence in the move while addressing a sports business conference in Los Angeles earlier in the day.
“There’s no secret,” Smith affirmed. “Not everything on the internet is true, but in this case, it’s accurate.”
Smith, who also owns the NBA’s Utah Jazz, is reportedly acquiring the Coyotes from the NHL for a hefty sum of $1.2 billion, highlighting his unwavering belief in the passionate sports culture of Utah.
“I have incredible faith in the people of Utah,” Smith emphasized. “We show up. It’ll be packed. I’m excited about that and showing that. There’s so much work to do from the practice facility on down to everything else, but we’ll get it done.”
Ownership Silence
On the other hand, current Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo and general manager Bill Armstrong have opted to remain tight-lipped regarding any potential relocation or change in ownership. Their silence may hint at a significant transition in the organization’s future.
