Allegations Against Air Canada Employees
Two Air Canada employees have been implicated in the theft of the valuable gold cargo. Despite the charges filed against them, only a fraction of the stolen gold amounting to $65,000 has been recovered so far. On the anniversary of the gold heist, authorities disclosed that a flight originating from Zurich, Switzerland landed at Pearson Airport with 880 pounds of gold and $1.8 million in foreign currency. Subsequently, the cargo mysteriously vanished within ten hours of its transfer to a different area of the airport, prompting an immediate investigation.
Theft Modus Operandi
Investigators believe that the perpetrators of the crime used heavy machinery, including a forklift, to load the gold bars onto a white, unmarked box truck. The criminals then allegedly drove the truck out of the Air Canada Cargo terminal with ease. Reports indicate that the truck’s driver presented a legitimate airway bill, possibly obtained through illicit means, to gain access to the warehouse where the gold was stored.
Arrests and Legal Action
A 54-year-old Air Canada employee has been arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit an indictable offense and theft exceeding $5,000.
