Ashley Moyer-Gleich Makes NBA Playoff History
Ashley Moyer-Gleich received unexpected news before leaving for the airport, thinking she was done for the season. However, she discovered that she had more games to officiate, making her just the second woman in NBA history to referee a playoff game. The league announced her selection as one of the 36 referees for Round 1 of the playoffs, which kicked off last weekend.
Having served as a Division II player for Millersville University in her home state of Pennsylvania, Moyer-Gleich transitioned to NBA officiating full-time in November 2018. With over 200 regular-season games under her belt in just six seasons, she now joins an elite group of first-time playoff selections, alongside Marat Kogut and J.T. Orr.
Reflecting on her journey, Moyer-Gleich shared, “It’s surreal. It really is.” She also expressed gratitude for the support she received, especially from her mother who was by her side when she received the news of her playoff assignment.
The NBA President of League Operations, Byron Spruell, congratulated Moyer-Gleich and the other 35 officials for their dedication and professionalism. He highlighted the honor of officiating in the NBA Playoffs and commended the staff’s teamwork throughout the season.
The NBA Finals feature a select group of 12 referees who don white warm-up jackets. While Moyer-Gleich is not there yet, she sets her sights on that coveted milestone. She aspires to progress to the role of crew chief and ultimately officiate in the Finals, a pinnacle achievement in the world of NBA officiating.
Moyer-Gleich’s journey represents a significant step forward for female representation in the NBA officiating realm. While the road ahead may be challenging, her determination and skill set her apart as a trailblazer in the sport.
