Colorado Avalanche Forward Logan O’Connor to Miss Remainder of Season Due to Hip Surgery

Colorado Avalanche forward Logan O’Connor is set to undergo hip surgery this week, sidelining him for the remainder of the season, according to coach Jared Bednar’s announcement on Sunday.

O’Connor has been absent from six games since the All-Star break, all stemming from the injury. Despite this setback, he had an impressive 13 goals and 12 assists in 57 games during this season. Bednar stated that there is currently no definitive timeline for O’Connor’s return, raising uncertainties about his availability for the upcoming training camp.

Bednar noted, “Just depends on what they go in and find and what they end up doing,” as the team prepares for a four-game road trip starting in Calgary on Tuesday.

Recent Moves and Team Updates

  • The Avalanche made significant acquisitions at the trade deadline to strengthen their team. They welcomed defenseman Sean Walker from Philadelphia, center Casey Mittelstadt from Buffalo, forward Brandon Duhaime from Minnesota, and center Yakov Trenin from Nashville. Additionally, Valeri Nichushkin returned to the lineup after a two-month absence and scored the overtime winning goal against Minnesota recently.
  • Forward Zach Parise is currently listed as day-to-day with an undisclosed injury, while a wave of illness is affecting Artturi Lehkonen, Ross Colton, and Jack Johnson within the locker room.

Potential Return of Captain Gabriel Landeskog

Addressing the speculation surrounding captain Gabriel Landeskog’s return this season, Bednar indicated that the team has a specific target date in mind, potentially during the playoffs. Landeskog has been recovering from cartilage replacement surgery on his right knee since May and has been absent for two consecutive seasons. Emphasizing the importance of adhering to the established timeline for Landeskog’s return, Bednar underscored the team’s commitment to his long-term well-being and career.

“He has a timeline that says, ‘You’re not coming back before this date. Doesn’t matter how good you feel.’ We’re sticking to that. It’s his career. So we’re not going to play with that regardless of where we’re at in a playoff series,” Bednar explained. “He will not come back before that date, and then he’s got to get himself to the point, hopefully, that he can come back. We don’t have clarity on that.”
