Bears Trade Quarterback Justin Fields to Steelers
The Chicago Bears have officially announced the trade of quarterback Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers acquired Fields in exchange for a 2025 sixth-round pick, with the potential for it to convert to a fourth-round selection based on Fields playing time this season, a source confirmed.
Fields, who completed his third season with the Bears in 2023, will now join the Steelers’ quarterback room alongside Russell Wilson, who recently signed a one-year deal with the team. According to a team source, Fields is not expected to compete with Wilson for the starting job but rather to learn from the experienced Super Bowl winner and Pro Bowler.
In a heartfelt social media post following the trade, Fields expressed gratitude to the Bears organization and the city of Chicago for the opportunity to be part of such a historic franchise.
“Can’t say thank you enough to the city of Chicago for taking me in and embracing me. Thank you to the entire Bears organization and ownership for allowing me the opportunity to be part of such a historic franchise.”
Two weeks ago at the NFL combine, Bears general manager Ryan Poles discussed the possibility of a Fields trade for the first time. Poles emphasized the importance of not leaving the quarterback in limbo and mentioned wanting to do right by Fields as Chicago planned its quarterback strategy for the future.
In a statement confirming the trade, Poles reiterated the organization’s commitment to finding the best situation for both Fields and the Bears. He thanked Fields for his dedication and leadership during his time with the team and wished him success in his NFL career.
With Fields no longer on the roster, the Bears are expected to target a quarterback in the upcoming draft. As the evaluation process for draft prospects continues, Bears coach Matt Eberflus emphasized the importance of situational awareness and execution in determining the team’s next starting quarterback.
Eberflus highlighted the significance of quarterbacks who can excel in critical game situations like third downs, two-minute drills, and end-of-game scenarios. He also emphasized the value of mental toughness and adaptability in quarterbacks when faced with different challenges on the field.
As the Bears navigate the transition to a new quarterback, the focus remains on finding a player who can thrive in the team’s offensive system under the guidance of new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron. Waldron expressed confidence in the adaptability of the offensive scheme to accommodate different quarterbacks’ skill sets and strengths.
As the Bears prepare for the 2024 season, the search for a new quarterback continues, with the team committed to finding a player who can lead the offense effectively and thrive in high-pressure situations.
