President Biden’s Willingness to Debate
President Biden affirmed his willingness to debate former President Trump in a conversation with Howard Stern. When asked about the potential debate, Biden responded, “I am, somewhere. I don’t know when. I am happy to debate him.”
Trump’s Absurd Response
Former President Trump took to Truth Social to respond to Biden’s statement in a characteristic manner. He dismissed Biden’s willingness, stating, “Crooked Joe Biden just announced that he’s willing to debate! Everyone knows he doesn’t really mean it, but in case he does, I say, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, ANYPLACE…”
Trump suggested a range of dates and locations for the debate, including at a rally in Michigan or at a courthouse. He accused Biden of instigating court cases as part of an “ELECTION INTERFERENCE AGAINST A POLITICAL OPPONENT.”
Debate Avoidance by Trump
Despite the media’s attempt to present both candidates as willing to debate, it is clear that Trump has a history of avoiding debates. Notably, he refused to participate in debates during the Republican presidential primary and caused the Republican Party to withdraw from the bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates.
Trump has hinted at his reluctance to debate Biden in the general election for some time. Given his past behavior, any comments from Trump regarding a willingness to debate should be met with skepticism.
Biden’s Challenge to Trump
President Biden is calling Trump out on his evasion of debates. While Trump has been relatively absent from campaign events, Biden emphasizes the importance of engaging in debates for those seeking the presidency.
If the presidential debates do not come to fruition, it will likely be due to Trump’s unwillingness to participate or his insistence on controlling the terms to his advantage.
