President Joe Biden Mourns the Death of Dagny ‘Nex’ Benedict
President Joe Biden issued a statement on Thursday expressing his condolences for the passing of 16-year-old Dagny ‘Nex’ Benedict. Benedict, a troubled girl struggling with gender dysphoria, tragically took her own life on February 8, just one day after being involved in a school altercation that she initiated. Notably, Biden did not release a similar statement for 22-year-old nursing student Laken Riley, who was abducted and brutally murdered on February 22 while out jogging on the University of Georgia campus. Riley’s alleged killer is an illegal immigrant from Venezuela who was granted entry into the United States in 2022 under the Biden administration, sparking controversy and criticism from Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) during last week’s State of the Union address.
Details Surrounding Dagny ‘Nex’ Benedict’s Death
Following an investigation, the medical examiner confirmed that Benedict’s death was a result of suicide. Contrary to earlier rumors, it was revealed that Benedict had overdosed on Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and Fluoxetine (Prozac) rather than being beaten to death during the altercation she caused. The LGBTQ community had championed her cause, falsely claiming that she was the victim of a violent attack. In reality, Benedict had instigated the confrontation by throwing water on a group of girls who were teasing her and her friends.
The media told us repeatedly that Nex was beaten to death by transphobes
They told us Libs Of TikTok was at fault
They told us that it could all be stopped if everyone just affirmed “trans kids”
Turns out, Nex Benedict actually died of an overdose, started the fight, and was… pic.twitter.com/hIsas2Anoy

In response to Benedict’s passing, President Biden released a statement expressing his grief and advocating for the rights and acceptance of nonbinary and transgender individuals. He emphasized the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment for all young people, highlighting the need to address discrimination and the alarming rate of suicide among LGBTQI+ youth.
Statement from President Joe Biden on Nex Benedict
Jill and I are heartbroken by the recent loss of Nex Benedict. Every young person deserves to have the fundamental right and freedom to be who they are, and feel safe and supported at school and in their communities. Nex Benedict, a kid who just wanted to be accepted, should still be here with us today.
Nonbinary and transgender people are some of the bravest Americans I know. But nobody should have to be brave just to be themselves. In memory of Nex, we must all recommit to our work to end discrimination and address the suicide crisis impacting too many nonbinary and transgender children. Bullying is hurtful and cruel, and no one should face the bullying that Nex did. Parents and schools must take reports of bullying seriously. My prayers are with Nex’s family, friends, and all who loved them – and to all LGBTQI+ Americans for whom this tragedy feels so personal, know this: I will always have your back.
To LGBTQI+ young people across the country – you are loved exactly as you are. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or alone, you can call or text 988, the National Crisis Hotline, and dial the number ‘3’ to talk to a counselor who has been specifically trained to support LGBTQI+ youth.
In light of these events, the Biden administration initiated an investigation into possible civil rights violations by the Owasso Public Schools, following a request from the Human Rights Campaign, an LGBTQ advocacy organization. Concerns were raised regarding the school’s handling of sex-based harassment incidents involving students.
Excerpt from the letter from the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights:
This letter is to notify you that the U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights (OCR), is opening for investigation the above-referenced complaint that you filed against the Owasso Public Schools (the District). Your complaint alleges that the District discriminated against students by failing to respond appropriately to sex-based harassment, of which it had notice, at Owasso High School during the 2023-2024 school year.
…OCR is opening the following issues for investigation:1. Whether the District failed to appropriately respond to alleged harassment of students in a manner consistent with the requirements of Title IX.
2. Whether the District failed to appropriately respond to alleged harassment of students in a manner consistent with the requirements of Section 504 and Title II.
Additionally, President Biden recently issued an apology for referring to the suspect in Laken Riley’s murder as an “illegal” during a public address. He acknowledged his choice of words and stated that he should have used the term “undocumented” instead.
WATCH: Joe Biden just went on MSNBC and said that he regrets using the word “illegal” during his State of the Union speech to refer to the killer of Laken Riley.
“I shouldn’t have used ‘illegal.’ It’s undocumented.”
