Smith, West Virginia’s richest individual, boasts a net worth of approximately $900 million, placing him on the cusp of billionaire status. In Alaska, Leonard Hyde, the president of commercial real estate developer JL Properties, holds the title of the state’s wealthiest resident with a net worth of $400 million. Meanwhile, in Delaware, Elizabeth Snyder reigns as the richest person with a net worth of $900 million, derived from her family business’ creation of the iconic waterproof fabric Gore-Tex.
The Battle of the Billionaires in California, New York, and Florida
In stark contrast, states like California, New York, and Florida are teeming with billionaire residents, sparking fierce competition for the title of richest individual. California leads the pack with 197 billionaires, followed closely by New York with 139, and Florida with 107.
Florida, in particular, has become a hotspot for the ultra-wealthy, given its lack of capital gains tax. Renowned figures like Amazon founder Jeff Bezos have made headlines by relocating to the Sunshine State. Bezos, with a staggering net worth exceeding $200 billion, recently announced his move from Seattle to Miami, purchasing multiple homes on an exclusive island colloquially known as South Florida’s “Billionaire Bunker”.
On the other hand, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, currently holding the title of the richest person in the U.S. with a net worth of $251 billion, has solidified his position as Texas’ wealthiest resident. Musk’s decision to move his companies to Austin underscores Texas’ emergence as a new hub for tech innovation, attracting some of the brightest minds in the industry.
