Empower Brands Recalls Two Million Black+Decker Garment Steamers Due to Burn Hazards

An alarming safety concern has prompted Empower Brands to recall two million Black+Decker garment steamers, citing potential burn hazards to users. The company has taken this significant step following 317 reports of hot water issues associated with the steamers. These reports included 82 instances of burn injuries, with seven cases resulting in second-degree burns, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The reported issues indicate that the affected steamers may expel, spray, or leak hot water during use, posing a significant risk to user safety. Of particular concern is the fact that almost one-third of the reported incidents, which included 19 burn cases, involved steamers that had been repaired as part of a previous recall in November 2022 or featured an updated design subsequent to the initial recall.

Prior to this latest recall, Empower Brands had already recalled over 500,000 units of the same Black+Decker garment steamers due to similar issues. In response to those safety concerns, the company had offered free replacements for the upper assembly of the steamers. This move followed 241 reports of hot water expelling from the steamers, with 32 reported burn cases, including two instances of second-degree burns.

Identification and Resolution Process

The current recall affects all Black+Decker Model HGS011 Easy Garment Steamers, including those that had undergone repairs or modifications post the earlier recall. Consumers who purchased these steamers between June 2021 and February 2024 from retailers such as Walmart, Target, Amazon, Bed Bath & Beyond, and others are urged to take immediate action if they own the affected product. The steamers were typically priced between $14 and $23 and were available in various colors.

To ascertain if their steamer is subject to the recall, customers are advised to locate the model numbers, which are either printed at the bottom of the steamer or on the packaging. The affected model numbers are: HGS011F, HGS011S, HGS011, and HGS011T. Additionally, UPC codes located on the sides, back, and bottom of the color package can also help in identifying the recalled products. The UPC codes to look for are: 0 50875 82840 7, 0 50875 82839 1, 0 50875 82838 4, and 0 50875 00272 2.

In light of the safety risks posed by these garment steamers, consumers are strongly advised to cease using the product immediately and reach out to Empower Brands to initiate the refund process. Ensuring consumer safety remains paramount for all stakeholders involved, and proactive measures are essential to prevent any further incidents or injuries.
