DUNEDIN, Fla. – Alek Manoah’s Injury Setback During Spring Training

A few days after facing off against the Tigers in Lakeland, Fla. on Feb. 27, Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah experienced discomfort in his shoulder. Initially brushing it off as something minor, he quickly realized the issue was more severe when attempting to throw a bullpen session.

Describing the sensation as “heavy” and “cranky,” Manoah made the decision to avoid exacerbating the injury by refraining from putting additional strain on his shoulder. As a result, he was forced to miss a scheduled start against the Red Sox on March 3 and has since been diligently focusing on rehabilitating his shoulder to optimal health.

Over the past 10 days, Manoah has been undergoing daily treatment along with flat ground throwing to maintain his form. Additionally, he has been engaging in strengthening exercises, stability routines, cupping therapy, and other recovery methods.

Speaking about his recovery process, Manoah emphasized the importance of allowing his shoulder to heal gradually while gradually increasing his workload each day. Despite the setback, he remains committed to returning to full strength in a structured manner.

Implications for Blue Jays Pitching Rotation

If Manoah continues to progress positively, he anticipates being able to resume bullpen sessions by the following week. However, given the typical timeframe required for starting pitchers to build up their stamina, it is unlikely that he will be fully prepared by the season opener on March 28.

As each pitcher’s recovery process varies, the Blue Jays are faced with the possibility of having to adjust their starting rotation to accommodate Manoah’s absence. With Kevin Gausman also recovering from a shoulder issue, the team may need to rely on alternative options like Bowden Francis and Mitch White to fill in.

Despite the challenges posed by these injuries, the Blue Jays remain hopeful that both Gausman and Manoah will be back in action by April, bolstering the team’s pitching depth for the long season ahead.

Orelvis Martinez’s Progress in the Minor Leagues

Although 22-year-old prospect Orelvis Martinez is not expected to make the opening day roster, his impressive performances in triple-A Buffalo and the upper minors last season have caught the attention of the Blue Jays organization. Known for his power hitting, Martinez showcased his skills by hitting multiple home runs and improving his overall offensive performance last year.

While his raw offensive talent is undeniable, the team is evaluating his defensive abilities at second base, plate discipline, and overall readiness for the major leagues before making a final decision on his promotion.

Transition of Experience and Youth in Blue Jays Lineup

With seasoned veterans like Justin Turner and Joey Votto joining the Blue Jays roster, the team aims to capitalize on their wealth of experience to guide younger players like Martinez. As two of the oldest position players in baseball, Turner and Votto bring a unique blend of leadership and skill to the team, potentially reshaping the dynamics of the lineup.
