Among these, the Airstream Excella motorhome, known as the original Astrovan, holds a special place in the hearts of space enthusiasts.
For over three decades, the Astrovan faithfully transported astronauts to the launch pad, becoming a symbol of the space shuttle program. Now, Boeing has partnered with Airstream to create the Astrovan II, a modern incarnation of this legendary vehicle.
A New Chapter in Space Travel
The Astrovan II represents a departure from its predecessor in both form and function. Adorned with striking graphics of the Starliner in orbit, this eight-seat van offers a host of amenities unimaginable in the original model. During a recent launch-day rehearsal, Commander Wilmore and his crew enjoyed the luxury of the Astrovan II, indulging in a movie selection tailored to their aviation backgrounds. With the backdrop of “Top Gun: Maverick,” the astronauts immersed themselves in flying and dramatic sequences, setting the stage for their momentous mission.
Moreover, the Astrovan II is equipped with advanced features such as a designated area for suit pressurization devices and live streaming capabilities through integrated cameras, courtesy of a partnership with AT&T. This cutting-edge vehicle not only ensures the comfort and safety of its passengers but also showcases the technological advancements driving the future of space travel.
