Cleveland Browns and Nick Chubb Reach Agreement on Contract Restructuring
In a recent development, the Cleveland Browns and star running back Nick Chubb have come to terms on a reworked contract for the upcoming 2024 season. This agreement, confirmed by a source close to the situation, solidifies Chubb’s position on the team for the coming year.
According to information shared with ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Browns have successfully reduced Chubb’s salary cap hit from $15.85 million to $6.275 million. Additionally, the new contract includes provisions that could see Chubb earn up to $12.2 million next season, contingent upon his performance reaching levels he had demonstrated prior to sustaining a season-ending left knee injury in the previous year.
Prior to the restructuring, Chubb was slated to earn a base salary of $11.8 million for the 2024 season, which was the final year of his existing deal. Unfortunately, Chubb’s 2023 season was cut short when he suffered a significant knee injury in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Following the injury, Chubb underwent multiple surgeries to address damage to various ligaments in his knee, including his medial capsule, meniscus, MCL, and ACL.
Despite the challenges presented by his injury, the Browns remain optimistic about Chubb’s potential return to the field during the upcoming season. As a four-time Pro Bowler and key playmaker for the team, Chubb’s presence on the field has been sorely missed since his injury. Notably, the left knee injury suffered by Chubb in 2023 was on the same knee that had previously undergone reconstruction after he tore multiple ligaments, including the MCL, PCL, and LCL, while playing college football for Georgia in 2015.
The agreement between the Browns and Chubb was initially reported by NFL Network, marking a significant development in the ongoing contract negotiations between the two parties.
