Canada Defeats United States in Overtime to Win Gold
Canada emerged victorious over the United States in a thrilling 6-5 overtime victory during the IIHF Women’s World Championship.
Danielle Serdachny sealed the win for Canada with the game-winning goal during the extra frame.
Scoring Action
The tone was set early in the game when Canada’s Erin Ambrose found the back of the net with a goal from the point just 6:32 into the first period. The United States responded promptly with a goal from Laila Edwards only 1:40 later.
In the second period, Canada regained the lead thanks to a goal from Julia Gosling scored on the rush. The United States answered back with a goal by Megan Keller, tying the game midway through the period.
Alex Carpenter then scored to give the United States its first lead of the game, but Canada’s captain, Marie-Philip Poulin, answered with a precise shot that found the back of the net, making the score 3-3.
As the game progressed to the third period, both teams continued to score early on, setting the stage for a dramatic finish. Poulin managed to score her second goal of the night, giving Canada a lead with just over seven minutes remaining. Caroline Harvey of the United States quickly responded, tying the game once again.
Historical Rivalry
The rivalry between Canada and the United States in women’s hockey continues to deliver intense matchups. The last four gold medal games have featured both teams, with the United States winning the previous encounter in 2023 while Canada claimed victory in 2021 and 2022.
This win marks the 13th time that Canada has secured gold at the prestigious international tournament, solidifying their dominance in women’s ice hockey on the world stage.
