Montreal Canadiens Trade Goaltender Jake Allen to New Jersey Devils
The Montreal Canadiens have made a significant move by trading veteran goaltender Jake Allen to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a conditional third-round pick, according to a report by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
Under the terms of the trade, the pick could potentially become a second-round pick based on the number of games Allen plays for the Devils.
Allen, 33, found himself in a crowded crease situation this season with the Canadiens as the team looks towards rebuilding. With younger goalies Samuel Montembeault and Cayden Primeau also in the mix, the Canadiens opted to part ways with the experienced netminder.
Throughout the current season, Allen has posted a record of 6-12-3 along with a 3.65 goals-against average and a .892 save percentage. Despite these statistics, Allen’s veteran presence and leadership will now be transferred to the Devils.
Originally from Fredericton, Allen inked a two-year, $7.7 million contract with Montreal, with the Canadiens agreeing to retain 50 percent of his salary for the remaining duration of the deal.
The New Jersey Devils have been actively seeking to bolster their goaltending department, with Allen now set to provide support following an injury to Vitek Vanecek earlier in the season. The Devils were also rumored to have shown interest in acquiring Calgary Flames’ star goalkeeper Jacob Markstrom.
Notably, Allen’s career includes a stint with the St. Louis Blues, where he served as the backup to Jordan Binnington during the team’s Stanley Cup-winning season in 2018-19. Over his career, Allen has accumulated a record of 189-162-41 across 416 games, with a commendable 2.75 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage.
Selected by the Blues in the second round (34th overall) of the 2008 NHL Draft, Allen’s journey has seen him establish himself as a reliable presence in net for multiple NHL franchises.
