Washington Capitals Lose Sixth Consecutive Game
Charlie Lindgren, the goaltender for the Washington Capitals, faced three goals on just 21 shots, with the final one coming in overtime from Jake Sanderson. This led to a disappointing 3-2 loss to the Ottawa Senators on Sunday night, further damaging the Capitals’ hopes of making the playoffs during this late stage of the NHL season.
Playoff Hopes Diminishing
The defeat puts the Capitals in a precarious position, sitting on the outside looking in with only five games remaining. Despite goals from Max Pacioretty and Aliaksei Protas, they find themselves tied with Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, one point behind Detroit for the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. Additionally, they are two points behind the New York Islanders for third place in the Metropolitan Division.
The upcoming game against the Red Wings on Tuesday night could prove pivotal for the Capitals in their quest for a playoff spot. However, the loss to Ottawa has already created a challenging scenario for the team.
Recent Struggles
This loss resembled a previous defeat earlier in the week, with the Capitals allowing a crucial goal late in the game. Against Carolina, the game-winner was scored with just under two minutes left in regulation. In this game, Ridley Greig found the back of the net with 7:17 remaining, and Sanderson secured the victory only 41 seconds into overtime.
Furthermore, the Capitals suffered another setback as defenseman Rasmus Sandin sustained an upper-body injury during the game. His injury occurred when his head struck a stanchion after a collision on his final shift.
Looking Ahead
Joonas Korpisalo, the goaltender for the Ottawa Senators, stood tall and made 19 saves to secure the win, snapping a three-game losing streak for his team.
Next on the schedule, the Senators will continue their road trip with a matchup against the Florida Panthers. On the other side, the Capitals will turn to Lindgren once again as they face the Red Wings. This game presents another opportunity for both teams to bolster their playoff aspirations.
