Cleveland Cavaliers Stun Boston Celtics in Playoff Victory
Donovan Mitchell displayed an outstanding performance, contributing 29 points, while Evan Mobley showcased a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds as the Cleveland Cavaliers triumphed over the top-seeded Boston Celtics with a commanding score of 118-94, evening their second-round playoff series.
After a significant defeat two nights prior, where Mitchell scored 33 points but received minimal assistance, the Cavaliers took control in the third quarter and responded with a resounding win. In a remarkable display, Mitchell netted 16 points in the third quarter, opening the fourth quarter with three consecutive baskets, including a spectacular 28-foot, banked 3-pointer that left him shrugging his shoulders in self-assurance while backpedaling on defense.
While Jayson Tatum managed to score 25 points for the Boston Celtics and Jaylen Brown added 19 points, Derrick White, who notably contributed 25 points in Game 1 that led to the Celtics’ comfortable 120-95 victory, struggled with just 10 points, missing seven out of his eight 3-point attempts.
Shift in Series Momentum and Game Schedule
The series is set to transition to Cleveland for Games 3 and 4 scheduled on Saturday and Monday, respectively, followed by a return to Boston for Game 5 on Wednesday.
Caris LeVert, entering the game from the bench, contributed significantly with 21 points for the Cavaliers. Amidst the competitive encounter, LeVert’s critical layup following a missed 3-pointer by the Celtics ignited a contentious moment as he drew a flagrant foul from Tatum. Subsequently, with the game comfortably in Cleveland’s favor with a 25-point lead, Boston coach Joe Mazzulla opted to rotate his players by emptying the bench.
Both teams then adjusted their strategies, with Cleveland’s J.B. Bickerstaff granting some respite to Mitchell, who logged 37 minutes on the court. Although the Cavaliers initially faced a nine-point deficit in the first quarter, mirroring the specter of a potential second consecutive rout, they swiftly rebounded with an 11-point surge, predominantly fueled by LeVert’s eight-point contribution. The game saw a seesaw battle as Boston claimed an eight-point lead in the second quarter before the Cavaliers managed to equalize the score at halftime.
