Fans of Turkey’s Trabzonspor created chaos on Sunday as they stormed the pitch and engaged in altercations with security forces and players from Fenerbahce following a 3-2 defeat for their team. The incident is the latest in a series of controversies that have plagued the league this season.
In the game, Brazilian midfielder Fred netted two goals in the first half, giving Fenerbahce a lead over Trabzonspor. Despite efforts from Trabzonspor’s Enis Bardhi and Trezeguet, Fenerbahce’s Michy Batshuayi secured victory with a late goal, prompting heightened tensions between the two teams and their supporters.
After the final whistle, a supporter confronted Fenerbahce defender Bright Osayi-Samuel on the field, leading to a scuffle. Additional fans rushed onto the pitch, prompting security forces to step in to protect the players. Fenerbahce’s head coach confirmed that his team was attacked unprovoked, while Trabzonspor’s coach expressed disappointment over the post-match events.
Authorities Launch Investigation
Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya took to social media to announce that an investigation had been initiated to identify the fans involved in the brawl at the end of the match. He emphasized the importance of sportsmanship and condemned the violence that unfolded during the game.
This incident adds to a string of controversies in the Turkish league this season, including assaults on referees, match postponements, and public outcry over officiating decisions. FIFA President Gianni Infantino denounced the violence, underscoring the need for player safety and urging accountability for those responsible for the unsavory events in Trabzon.
