Chevrolet to End Production of Malibu to Make Room for Next-Generation Bolt

It has been nearly a decade since the last iteration of the Chevrolet Malibu was introduced. While the vehicle itself was not inherently flawed, it failed to leave a lasting impression, often becoming a popular choice among rental car agencies. Despite its gradual fade into obscurity, the Chevrolet Malibu has persisted in production up until this point. However, according to reports from the Detroit News, General Motors intends to cease production of the Malibu later this year.

The decision to discontinue the Malibu is part of a strategic move to accommodate the forthcoming next-generation Chevrolet Bolt at the Fairfax Assembly & Stamping plant in Kansas City, Kansas. The new iteration of the Bolt will be constructed using GM’s Ultium platform, raising questions about the extent of its production capacity. Nevertheless, the imminent end of the Malibu production line in November will mark the initiation of preparations for the arrival of the Bolt.

A spokesperson from GM stated, “After nine generations and over 10 million global sales, GM will end production of the Chevrolet Malibu in November 2024 and pause production of the Cadillac XT4 after January 2025. Affected employees will receive support in accordance with the UAW-GM agreement. Following the pause, production is set to resume in late 2025, with the Fairfax facility transitioning to produce both the Bolt EV and XT4 models on a shared assembly line.”

Implications for Consumers

For consumers in the market for a budget-friendly vehicle offering reliable transportation and warranty coverage, the discontinuation of the Malibu presents an opportunity. Listings on platforms like Autotrader currently feature brand new Malibu models priced well below the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP). Prospective buyers may have room to negotiate further discounts with dealers, making the Malibu an appealing option for those seeking value.

Despite the Malibu’s impending departure from production lines, its availability at reduced prices underscores its continued relevance within Chevrolet’s lineup. As consumers weigh their options in the evolving automotive landscape, the Malibu’s legacy as a dependable choice in its segment persists.
