China Unveils Concept for Lunar Base
The China National Space Administration (CNSA) recently showcased its vision for a planned lunar base in a captivating video released during the country’s annual space day celebration. The ambitious project, known as the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), was initially proposed by China and Russia in 2021. Today, China spearheads the initiative and seeks collaboration with international partners to bring this lunar outpost to fruition.
Expanding Partnerships
Several countries have already joined forces with China in this groundbreaking endeavor. Alongside China and Russia, nations such as Venezuela, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Belarus, South Africa, Egypt, Thailand, and Nicaragua have signed on to participate in the ILRS program. This collaboration reflects a global interest in lunar exploration and the potential scientific discoveries that may result from establishing a research station on the moon.
Strategic Missions and Future Plans
The video presentation highlighted a series of upcoming missions that will form the foundation of the ILRS. These missions include surface sample return operations, lunar lander and rover expeditions, as well as the deployment of supporting orbital satellites. The planned Chang’e-6 and Chang’e-7 missions, set for launch in the coming years, will lay the groundwork for the development of the lunar base, with Chang’e-8 following suit to complete the initial phase by 2028.
Subsequent stages of the project will involve the establishment of critical infrastructure such as communications systems, power generation capabilities, and other essential facilities. These advancements will pave the way for the construction of a fully functional and habitable lunar outpost dedicated to extensive scientific research and experimentation.
According to reports from Chinese officials, the ILRS aims to serve as a comprehensive scientific platform for interdisciplinary research activities focused on lunar exploration and utilization. The station is envisioned to operate independently for long durations, either on the lunar surface or in lunar orbit, enabling continuous scientific investigations and technological advancements.
Phased Development and Long-Term Vision
Chief designer of China’s lunar exploration program, Wu Weiren, outlined a strategic two-phase approach for constructing the ILRS. The first phase aims to establish essential scientific facilities and supporting elements near the lunar south pole by 2035. Subsequently, the second phase will focus on expanding these facilities into a fully equipped and sustainable research station of considerable scale by 2045.
Notably, the video presentation captured a peculiar sight of a retired NASA Space Shuttle depicted in the background of the lunar base concept. While NASA is restricted from engaging in direct collaboration with Chinese entities, both countries maintain independent lunar exploration programs. China’s development of its own robust launch vehicles underscores its commitment to achieving lunar exploration milestones.

Designating April 24 as ‘Space Day’ in 2016, China commemorates the historic launch of its first satellite, Dongfanghong-1, in 1970. This annual celebration symbolizes China’s profound dedication to advancing space exploration and embracing the vast possibilities that lie beyond Earth’s atmosphere. As China propels itself towards establishing a pioneering lunar research station, the world eagerly anticipates the scientific breakthroughs and discoveries that await us on the surface of the moon and beyond.
