Colorado Edges Boise State 60-53 in NCAA Tournament

In a tightly contested battle at UD Arena, Colorado found themselves trailing against Boise State. Despite All-Pac-12 guard KJ Simpson struggling to find his shot and allowing offensive rebounds, the Buffaloes were able to rally back against the winless Broncos in NCAA tournament play. With just over five minutes remaining and a four-point deficit, a critical timeout by coach Tad Boyle shifted the momentum.

Executing impressive defense and sharp shooting down the stretch, Colorado managed to turn the game in their favor, securing a 60-53 victory over Boise State in a First Four matchup. This win propels the 10th-seeded Buffaloes to the next round in the South region, where they are set to face off against the 7th-seeded Florida on Friday in Indianapolis.

Key Plays and Players

Contributing significantly to Colorado’s success was KJ Simpson, who overcame early struggles to score 19 points and make crucial plays when it mattered most. Simpson’s leadership and scoring prowess were complemented by center Eddie Lampkin Jr., whose energy and timely baskets proved vital for the Buffaloes.

Lampkin’s putback off an air ball to beat the shot clock late in the game was singled out by Coach Boyle as a game-changing moment that lifted Colorado to a decisive advantage. Alongside Tristan da Silva’s defensive efforts against Boise State’s top scorer, Tyson Degenhart, the Buffaloes displayed resilience and composure under pressure.

Boise State’s Shortcomings

Despite a strong showing on the boards with 19 offensive rebounds, Boise State’s poor shooting performance ultimately cost them the game. With only two made 3-pointers and struggles in converting close-range shots, the Broncos failed to capitalize on their opportunities, falling short in the crucial moments.

Coach Leon Rice acknowledged the need for improvement and highlighted the determination of his team to bounce back stronger in the future. Although Boise State’s tournament woes continue, their efforts and achievements this season were not overlooked.

Looking Ahead

Colorado’s historic 25th win of the season marks a significant milestone for the team, but the players remain focused on the next challenge. With a determined mindset and a hunger for further success, the Buffaloes are eager to build on their recent victory and continue their pursuit of excellence in the tournament.

“It’s just the start. We’ve got to get the next one on Friday,” Lampkin emphasized, reflecting the team’s unwavering commitment to reaching greater heights.
