Connor McDavid Records 100th Assist of Season

On Monday night, Edmonton Oilers’ standout player Connor McDavid achieved a significant milestone in NHL history by notching his 100th assist of the season during the game against the San Jose Sharks. McDavid’s accomplishment places him in an elite category as only the fourth player in NHL history to reach triple digits in assists in a single season.

McDavid’s Return to the Lineup

McDavid’s remarkable performance came after a brief hiatus due to a lower-body injury that forced him to miss three games. Returning to the ice against San Jose, McDavid entered the game with 99 assists in 74 games. He secured his 100th assist by setting up Zach Hyman’s goal in the second period, marking Hyman’s 54th goal of the season.

Hockey legends Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, and Bobby Orr are the only other players in NHL history to have achieved more than 100 assists in a single season, highlighting the magnitude of McDavid’s accomplishment.

McDavid’s Reflections on the Achievement

Expressing his emotions about the milestone, McDavid stated, “It means a lot. Those three are obviously three of the greatest players to ever play. To share a little something with them, it means a lot to me. It has been a different type of year, but everybody stuck with it, and we’ve put ourselves in a good spot heading into when it matters most.”

McDavid’s previous career-high in assists was 89 last season, showcasing his continuous growth and impact on the ice.

Rare Achievement in the NHL

Remarkably, the NHL could witness two players surpassing the 100-assist mark in the same season after a 32-season drought. Tampa Bay Lightning’s Nikita Kucherov is close behind McDavid with 99 assists in 80 games, bringing an exciting competitive element to the league.

Despite facing fierce competition, McDavid’s Oilers emerged victorious against the Sharks with a commanding 9-2 win, bolstering their chances of clinching the Pacific Division title. McDavid’s personal contribution to the victory included scoring his 32nd goal of the season, further solidifying his status as one of the league’s premier players.
