Baltimore Orioles Defeat Red Sox 7-1 in Boston Home Opener

Colton Cowser showcased his offensive prowess by driving in four runs, while Corbin Burnes delivered a masterful performance on the mound as the Baltimore Orioles secured a convincing 7-1 victory over the Red Sox in Boston’s home opener.

Cowser’s impactful display included a pair of RBI doubles, with the second one coming in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie. He also contributed with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, helping the Orioles halt a two-game losing streak.

Burnes, who improved to 2-0 on the season, stifled the Red Sox offense by limiting them to just two hits over seven strong innings. Despite surrendering Tyler O’Neill’s sixth home run of the season in the first inning, Burnes recorded six strikeouts and issued only two walks.

Adley Rutschman, Anthony Santander, and Cedric Mullins chipped in with RBI singles to bolster the Orioles’ offensive attack. Overall, Baltimore tallied 13 hits and capitalized on clutch situations by scoring their first four runs with two outs. The team’s efficiency with runners in scoring position was evident as they went an impressive 8 for 15 in such scenarios.

On the opposing side, Boston’s Brayan Bello (1-1) endured a challenging outing, allowing three runs and four hits over 5 1/3 innings. The Red Sox, who previously completed a 7-3 West Coast trip, struggled to contain the Orioles’ offensive onslaught.

In the injury department, the Red Sox received unfortunate news as shortstop Trevor Story is set to undergo season-ending surgery for a dislocated left shoulder. Additionally, pitcher Nick Pivetta is dealing with a strained right flexor, adding to Boston’s mounting list of elbow-related injuries. Story landed on the 10-day injured list following his shoulder dislocation, with an anticipated recovery timeline of six months. Pivetta, on the other hand, was retroactively placed on the 15-day IL.

Looking ahead, the Orioles will send left-hander Cole Irvin (0-1, 7.20 ERA) to the mound in the upcoming matchup, while the Red Sox are yet to announce their starting pitcher for the contest.
