Former Baseball Star Darryl Strawberry Recovering from Heart Attack

Former baseball star Darryl Strawberry, known for his career with the New York Mets and Yankees, is currently recuperating from a heart attack at SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital. The news was verified by Mets spokesperson Jay Horwitz, who shared that the incident occurred on Monday, just a day before the eight-time All-Star’s 62nd birthday.

Strawberry personally acknowledged his condition with a post on Instagram, expressing his gratitude and relief at his well-being. The ex-player credited the medical team and staff at St. Joseph West in Lake St. Louis for their prompt response and the successful stent procedure that facilitated the restoration of his heart’s health.

Presently residing in O’Fallon, Missouri, Strawberry is reported to be in stable condition and recovering comfortably. His former team, the Mets, announced their plans to retire his iconic jersey number, 18, on June 1, following the retirement of Dwight Gooden’s number 16 on April 14. Both players were instrumental in securing the 1986 World Series title for the team.

During his tenure with the Mets from 1983 to 1990, Strawberry amassed an impressive record as a seven-time All-Star, earning the National League Rookie of the Year title in 1983. Across 17 seasons that involved stints with the Los Angeles Dodgers (1991-93), San Francisco Giants (1994), and New York Yankees (1995-99), he recorded a batting average of .259, 335 home runs, 1,000 RBIs, and 221 stolen bases. Notably, Strawberry was a key player in three World Series victories with the Yankees.

Despite his successful career, Strawberry faced challenges due to substance abuse issues and medical adversities such as colon cancer treatment, which led to his absence during the 1998 World Series. Nonetheless, his contributions to the sport and his ongoing recovery serve as testaments to his resilience and enduring legacy.
