DJ LeMahieu’s Rehab Update

New York Yankees’ veteran infielder DJ LeMahieu faced a setback in his return from a fractured right foot during a rehab assignment on Tuesday night. The player experienced soreness in his foot and subsequently left the game. The Yankees have announced that he will return to New York for further evaluation by a team physician.

During the rehab assignment, LeMahieu struck out at the beginning of the game for the Double-A Somerset Patriots. He briefly played third base in the first inning but did not return to the field for the second inning. This unexpected development has put a halt to his potential return to the Yankees’ lineup in the near future.

Recent Developments and Outlook

Yankees manager Aaron Boone had previously expressed optimism about LeMahieu rejoining the team in Baltimore next week. The original plan was for LeMahieu to participate in games scheduled for Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. However, given the latest setback, this timeline may need to be adjusted.

At 35 years old, LeMahieu is the oldest player on the Yankees’ roster. He initially suffered the foot injury during a spring training game on March 16, where a foul ball struck his foot. This is not the first time LeMahieu has dealt with foot injuries, as he missed the 2022 postseason due to a broken toe and ligament damage.

Despite facing challenges last season, including a slow start, LeMahieu managed to bounce back in the latter half of the year. He concluded the season with a .243 batting average, hitting 15 home runs in 136 games. In his career, LeMahieu has earned two batting titles, showcasing his prowess as a reliable hitter.

In LeMahieu’s absence, infielder Oswaldo Cabrera has been filling in at third base for the Yankees, starting in 18 of the team’s 24 games this season. The team is likely to make adjustments to their lineup strategy until LeMahieu is fully recovered and ready to return to action.
