Defensive End Dorance Armstrong Reaches Three-Year Deal with Washington Commanders
Defensive end Dorance Armstrong has decided to stay within the NFC East division and reunite with head coach Dan Quinn by signing a lucrative three-year contract with the Washington Commanders. Sources familiar with the matter revealed to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler that the deal could be worth up to $45 million.
Background and Performance
Amidst the spotlight on stars like Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence in the Dallas Cowboys’ defense over the past few seasons, the 26-year-old Armstrong managed to amass an impressive total of 21 sacks during that timeframe. Notably, Armstrong enjoyed a career-best season in 2022 with a notable 8.5 sacks. Despite playing significantly fewer snaps in 2023, he still managed a commendable 7.5 sacks.
Following the 2021 season, Armstrong became a free agent, prompting negotiations with the Cowboys. Ultimately, the team secured him on a two-year contract worth $12 million after another player, Randy Gregory, turned down an offer to join the Denver Broncos.
Contribution and Versatility
Aside from his prowess as a pass rusher, Armstrong’s skill set extends to his stoutness against the run game and his contributions on special teams. Throughout his tenure with the Cowboys spanning 93 games, Armstrong made significant statistical contributions, including 169 tackles, 23.5 sacks, 5 tackles for loss, 94 quarterback pressures, 4 pass breakups, 3 forced fumbles, and 5 fumble recoveries. Additionally, he blocked two punts and a field goal, showcasing his versatility and impact beyond traditional defensive duties.
This significant move solidifies Washington’s defense and adds a valuable asset under the leadership of former Cowboys’ defensive coordinator turned Commanders’ head coach, Dan Quinn.
