The Advancement of the Dream Chaser Space Plane
The private Dream Chaser space plane has made significant progress towards venturing into the final frontier. Following the completion of its environmental testing phase, preparations are now underway to transport it to Florida for final assessments prior to launch. This milestone signifies a leap forward in space exploration and highlights the cooperation between Sierra Space and NASA in advancing space transportation technology.
Several months ago, Space.Com provided a detailed look at Sierra Space’s Dream Chaser space plane, named “Tenacity,” at NASA’s Neil Armstrong Test Facility in Ohio. Since then, Tenacity, along with its Shooting Star cargo module, has undergone a series of rigorous assessments to ensure its readiness for the challenges of space. These assessments included tests for intense shock, vibration, and thermal vacuum conditions to simulate the harsh environment of space.
The successful completion of these tests marks a significant achievement for Sierra Space and NASA. The meticulous testing process has positioned the Dream Chaser space plane on a trajectory towards operational missions later this year, showcasing the culmination of extensive research and development efforts.
Preparations for Launch
As preparations are being made to transport Tenacity and the Shooting Star cargo module to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the final phase of testing is set to commence. Upon arrival at the Space Station Processing Facility (SSPF) at KSC, the duo will undergo a series of tests, including acoustic testing, electromagnetic interference assessments, and final inspections to ensure the space plane’s thermal protection system is ready for the demands of space travel.
Tenacity is just the first of a fleet of Sierra Space space planes that will be part of NASA’s Commercial Resupply Services-2 contract, with plans for seven missions to the International Space Station. The next space plane in the series, Reverence, is already in production at Sierra Space’s facility in Louisville, Colorado. This expansion of Sierra Space’s capabilities underscores the company’s commitment to advancing space exploration and transportation.
Looking ahead, Sierra Space envisions a crewed version of the Dream Chaser space plane carrying astronauts in the near future.
