Happy Earth Day 2024!
On April 22nd of every year, the global community comes together to celebrate Earth Day. This annual event serves as a reminder of the environmental challenges we face as a planet, while also highlighting the ongoing efforts to preserve and protect our home.
The Role of NOAA’s Satellite Fleet
Among the most significant technological advances in monitoring our planet’s changing climate and atmospheric conditions are NOAA’s Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) and Polar Operational Environmental Satellites (POES) satellite fleet. These satellites play a crucial role in providing vital data that helps scientists and researchers track various environmental phenomena.
Since 1975, the GOES satellite network has been instrumental in monitoring air quality, identifying lightning strikes that could lead to wildfires, detecting meteors entering Earth’s atmosphere, and warning about space weather hazards. The current series, GOES-R, launched in 2016, with the final satellite in the series, GOES-U, set to launch in 2024 aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.
Advancements in Environmental Monitoring
These satellites not only help us track changes on our planet but also provide valuable information for weather forecasting, safety, aviation route planning, and wildfire detection. With advanced imaging and measurement capabilities, these satellites contribute significantly to our understanding of climate change impacts and improving forecasting accuracy.
NOAA currently operates ten satellites, including geostationary, polar orbiting, and deep space coverage satellites. These next-generation satellites serve as our eyes in the sky, aiding in the collection of essential data that informs critical decision-making processes and enhances our overall preparedness for environmental challenges.

During a recent NASA Earth Day media briefing, Karen St. Germain, NASA’s Earth Science Division Director, emphasized the importance of understanding our changing climate to make informed decisions. She highlighted the role of communities in adapting and thriving in the face of environmental changes, showcasing the value of knowledge and awareness in promoting sustainable practices.
