Elon Musk Redirects Twitter Links to X.com Domain

After more than a year and a half since purchasing Twitter, Elon Musk is now moving closer to phasing out the Twitter brand name by redirecting Twitter.com links to the X.com domain.

Transition to X.com

In a recent post on X, Musk announced that all core systems are now operating on X.com. Users were also informed that while the URL is changing, their privacy and data protection settings will remain unchanged.

Following his acquisition of Twitter in October 2022 and the transformation into X Corp. in April 2023, the social network continued to utilize Twitter.com as its primary domain for over a year, with X.com links directing to Twitter.com during this period.

Despite the transition, remnants of Twitter were still observable. For instance, a support link directed users to a help.twitter.com page, which subsequently redirected to a help.x.com page after reaching out to X’s public relations email. The auto-reply from [email protected], received after emailing [email protected], further highlighted these remnants.

Technical Challenges and User Experience

While efforts are being made to ensure a seamless transition from Twitter to X, challenges persist. Users may still encounter Twitter links that do not redirect to x.com, with discrepancies noted across different browsers and user login statuses.

Some users reported encountering error messages when attempting to access Twitter.com or x.com on certain browsers without prior login. Despite successful logins, users remained on twitter.com on the iPhone browser instead of being redirected to x.com.

The transition from Twitter to X has been marred by technical difficulties. An incident in early April saw Musk’s service automatically altering links posted by iOS app users from “twitter.com” to “x.com.” However, this automatic replacement extended to any URL ending in “twitter.com,” regardless of whether it was a legitimate link, which posed potential risks for phishing activities.

Conclusion

As Elon Musk progresses in rebranding Twitter to X, the technical challenges and hiccups encountered during this transition underscore the complexities involved in overhauling a well-established brand. Despite the hurdles, efforts are being made to streamline the user experience and ensure a successful migration to the new X.com domain.
