Florida Atlantic Star Guard Johnell Davis Declares for NBA Draft
Florida Atlantic standout guard Johnell Davis has made the decision to enter the transfer portal and declare for the upcoming NBA draft, as announced on Tuesday. The 6-foot-4 shooting guard from Indiana, who was a key player for the Owls, has now opened himself up to potential recruitment by other college programs.
Davis, who had a stellar season, was recognized for his outstanding performance by sharing AAC Player of the Year honors. He posted career-high averages of 18.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. Additionally, he showcased his shooting prowess by connecting on a career-best 41.4% from beyond the arc.
In one of the team’s most significant victories of the season, Davis delivered a remarkable performance with 35 points and nine rebounds to lead Florida Atlantic to triumph over Arizona in Las Vegas. Notably, he played a pivotal role in the team’s journey to the Final Four in the previous season, contributing an average of 13.8 points and 5.4 rebounds. His standout performance in the second-round victory over Fairleigh Dickinson, where he recorded 29 points and 12 rebounds, further underscored his impact on the court.
Following the departure of head coach Dusty May to Michigan, Florida Atlantic has witnessed several key players, including starting center Vladislav Goldin, reserve guard Nick Boyd, and reserve big man Giancarlo Rosado, entering the transfer portal. It is evident that Davis’ decision adds to the roster changes that the program will have to navigate in the upcoming season.
Recently, FAU made a significant coaching hire with the appointment of Baylor assistant John Jakus as the successor to Dusty May. The addition of Jakus will be crucial in guiding the team through these transitions and maintaining competitiveness in the AAC.
