Michigan Announces Dusty May as New Men’s Basketball Coach
Michigan has secured Dusty May from Florida Atlantic as their new men’s basketball coach, sources revealed. May’s representative, Andy Miller from Klutch Sports, is in the final stages of negotiating a long-term contract with University of Michigan officials.
May, aged 47, brings impressive credentials with him, having led Florida Atlantic to a surprising Final Four appearance in 2023 and a spot in the 2024 NCAA tournament, tallying 60 wins over the last two seasons. This achievement puts Florida Atlantic in an elite club alongside UConn and Houston in terms of wins.
The decision to bring May on board came swiftly after FAU’s loss to Northwestern in the recent NCAA tournament. Notably, high-profile programs such as Louisville and Vanderbilt had also expressed interest in May, but his connection to Michigan’s strong alumni network and the university’s commitment to athletics won him over. May sees Michigan’s values as a key factor in recruiting and retaining players in an era dominated by NIL and the transfer portal.
May steps into the shoes of Juwan Howard, who parted ways with Michigan after a five-year stint that ended with the team’s first last-place finish in the Big 10 since the 1966-67 season.
May’s coaching journey has been one of persistence and endurance. Taking the helm at FAU six years ago, he steered the program to a remarkable 126-69 record without a single losing season. FAU’s .822 winning percentage over the past two years ranks fifth in Division I, underscoring May’s coaching prowess.
Florida Atlantic’s recent achievements under May have rewritten the school’s history books, with back-to-back Top 25 rankings and a Final Four appearance in 2023 as a No. 9 seed, a feat accomplished by only nine teams seeded No. 9 or lower since seeding began in 1979.
An alumnus of Indiana University, May has honed his coaching skills through assistant roles at various institutions, including USC, Eastern Michigan, Murray State, UAB, Louisiana Tech, and Florida.
