Auto Safety Regulators Investigate Fisker Ocean’s Door Defects

Recent reports have indicated that auto safety regulators are conducting a preliminary probe into the troubled Fisker Ocean due to complaints regarding issues with the vehicle’s doors. Customers have raised concerns that the electric crossover’s doors are sometimes unresponsive, failing to open when needed, which can significantly impact functionality and safety. This latest development adds to the ongoing challenges faced by Fisker in ensuring the reliability and performance of its vehicles.

Complaints and Investigations

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defect Investigations has received 14 complaints from customers reporting intermittent failures of the latch and handle mechanism on the Fisker Ocean, leading to the inability to open all four passenger doors. This critical safety issue has prompted regulators to launch an official investigation to determine the root cause of the defect and assess potential risks to vehicle occupants.

Additionally, concerns have been raised regarding the emergency override mechanism, with reports indicating instances where the mechanism failed to activate, further complicating the situation for drivers and passengers. This marks the third NHTSA probe into the Fisker Ocean, following earlier investigations related to brake malfunctions and unintended vehicle movements.

Fisker’s Ongoing Challenges

Aside from the safety concerns surrounding the Fisker Ocean, the automaker has faced a series of setbacks in recent months. From being delisted from the stock market to the collapse of a potential investment deal with a major automaker, Fisker’s financial and operational stability has been called into question. The looming possibility of bankruptcy has further exacerbated the company’s precarious position in the market.

In a bid to stimulate sales and alleviate financial pressures, Fisker resorted to significantly reducing prices on remaining 2023 Ocean models, making them one of the most affordable EV options available. However, even with these drastic measures, the vehicle’s pricing remains contentious, indicating underlying challenges in the company’s product positioning and market competitiveness.

Moreover, production halts and uncertainties about the automaker’s future operations have cast further doubt on Fisker’s ability to overcome its current difficulties and regain momentum in the electric vehicle industry. The persistent issues with the Fisker Ocean, particularly its door defects, underscore the critical need for sustained quality control and rigorous safety standards in automotive manufacturing.
