Cameron Sutton Turns Himself In for Domestic Violence Charges

TAMPA, Fla. — After an extensive search, Cameron Sutton, a former NFL defensive back wanted for a domestic violence warrant, has surrendered himself to the authorities. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the 29-year-old Sutton arrived at a jail in Tampa, Florida, on Sunday night, following his attorney’s notification

Emphasizing the severity of the situation, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister stated, “After weeks of evading law enforcement, this man has finally made the right choice to turn himself in. Domestic violence has no place in our community, and no one is above the law here in Hillsborough County.”

The warrant against Sutton was for domestic battery by strangulation, which is classified as a third-degree felony carrying a maximum sentence of five years in prison. The sheriff’s department responded to a call about an ongoing domestic violence incident involving Sutton and a female on March 7, triggering the search for his whereabouts.

Response from Lions Management

Notably, shortly after the news broke about the warrant for Sutton’s arrest, the Detroit Lions President Rod Wood disclosed that Sutton had reported to the team’s training facility outside of Detroit. Wood mentioned, “We learned about the warrant at the same time everybody else did on social media. We were able to speak to Cam because he was actually in our building.”

Subsequently, the Lions took action and released Sutton from his contract on March 21. It was just last year that Detroit signed Sutton to a lucrative three-year, $33 million deal. In his time with the Lions, Sutton made a significant impact, contributing to the team’s success in clinching a division title after several decades, along with securing two playoff victories in a single postseason for the first time since 1957.

Throughout the regular season, Sutton started in all 17 games, registering a career-best 65 tackles and a single interception. His performance on the field during the playoffs further solidified his reputation as a skilled defensive player.

Prior to his tenure with the Lions, Sutton had a successful stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers, starting in 31 games in the 2021 and 2022 seasons. During his time in Pittsburgh, he managed to record five interceptions and 95 tackles. Notably, he was drafted by the Steelers in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Despite Sutton’s accomplishments on the field, it is crucial to remember the seriousness of the allegations against him. The legal process will now unfold to determine the appropriate course of action in light of the charges he faces.
