Disciplinary Proceeding of Jeffrey Clark

Jeffrey Clark, a former senior official in the Department of Justice (DOJ) under ex-president Donald Trump, is currently in the midst of a disciplinary proceeding that could result in the revocation of his license to practice law. Allegations against Clark include “making false claims as he attempted to enlist the agency in former President Donald Trump’s efforts to undo his 2020 election loss.” The District of Columbia Bar disciplinary counsel described Clark’s actions as an attempted coup within the DOJ.

Accusations of Coup Attempt

Clark’s lawyer has denied the allegations of a coup attempt, instead framing the incidents as an internal debate and disagreement within the DOJ. Clark was the individual Trump sought to appoint as the “acting” head of the DOJ, circumventing established norms to push forward baseless claims of election fraud in an attempt to overturn election results in several states.

Testimony of Pat Philbin

Former deputy White House counsel, Pat Philbin, recently testified publicly about the events that transpired at the DOJ during Trump’s efforts to subvert the democratic process. Philbin highlighted Clark’s misguided beliefs, including a theory involving ‘smart thermostats’ being used to manipulate voting machines. He cautioned Clark about the potential consequences of his actions, pointing out the likelihood of widespread civil unrest if the election results were overturned.

  • Philbin’s warnings about potential riots in major American cities were met with Clark’s unsettling response that the Insurrection Act could be used to suppress any disorder.
  • Clark advocated for the deployment of U.S. military and National Guard forces to quell any rebellion that might arise as a result of Trump’s refusal to accept the election outcome.

Implications of Testimony

The revelations from Philbin’s testimony shed light on the alarming willingness of certain individuals, including Clark, to embrace outlandish conspiracy theories and jeopardize their careers in support of Trump’s unfounded claims. More significantly, it underscores the ongoing threat posed by Trump and his allies, including those associated with Project 2025, who continue to strategize ways to circumvent legal and democratic barriers in pursuit of power.

Trump’s readiness to entertain the use of military force against American citizens to cling to power is indicative of authoritarian tendencies, rather than those befitting a democratically-elected leader.
