Google Unveils New Cloud TPU v5p AI Chip

Google made a significant announcement on Tuesday regarding the release of its latest AI chip, the Cloud TPU v5p. This cutting-edge tensor processing unit is a remarkable advancement in AI hardware, boasting the capability to train large language models nearly three times faster than its predecessor, the TPU v4. Large language models play a pivotal role in powering AI chatbots such as ChatGPT. Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, highlighted the importance of this new technology during the Google Cloud Next conference in Las Vegas.

Significance in the AI Arms Race

This unveiling marks a crucial milestone in the ongoing AI arms race among tech giants. Nvidia, a prominent supplier of GPUs, has long dominated the market, with Google’s parent company Alphabet being one of its top clients. Google’s rivals, including Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta, have also ventured into developing their own AI chips to compete in this rapidly evolving landscape.

Despite Google’s advancements in AI hardware, Nvidia remains a vital partner for the tech giant. The blog post detailing the Cloud TPU v5p mentions Nvidia extensively, reflecting the close collaboration between the two companies. Moreover, Google’s utilization of Nvidia’s latest chip, the Blackwell, in its AI Hypercomputer underscores the significance of this partnership.

Introduction of Google Axion CPU

In addition to the Cloud TPU v5p, Google introduced another groundbreaking innovation – the Arm-based central processing unit known as Google Axion. This novel CPU, unveiled by Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian in a captivating presentation, offers superior performance compared to existing Arm-based instances in the cloud.
