Gregg Doyel to No Longer Cover Indiana Fever Following Controversial Interaction

Indianapolis Star sports columnist Gregg Doyel, known for his coverage of various sports events, has made headlines recently due to an interaction with WNBA No. 1 draft pick Caitlin Clark. This interaction, which took place at Clark’s introductory news conference, was widely criticized in the national media as inappropriate. As a result, Doyel will not be covering the Indiana Fever in person during this upcoming season.

A statement issued by Gannett spokesperson Lark-Marie Antón revealed that the corporate owner of the Star does not comment on personnel matters. However, it did confirm that Doyel will not be covering the Indiana Fever moving forward. Antón did not comment on reports by former Star sportswriter Bob Kravitz, who stated that Doyel had been suspended for two weeks. Doyel’s most recent column was published on April 29.

Controversial Interaction at News Conference

The controversy stemmed from an exchange between Doyel and Clark during a press conference in Indianapolis. Clark, who had just been selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the WNBA draft by the Fever, was the subject of Doyel’s question. In response, Doyel made a heart gesture with his hands towards Clark, a gesture she typically makes towards her family members at her games. The dialogue that followed was deemed uncomfortable and inappropriate by many.

During the interaction, Clark asked Doyel if he liked the gesture, to which he responded positively. He then suggested that she start making the gesture towards him as well. The exchange was widely criticized for being awkward and crossing professional boundaries.

Apologies and Reflection

In the aftermath of the incident, Doyel issued apologies both on social media and through a published column. He expressed regret for his actions, acknowledging that his attempt at being friendly and welcoming had backfired. Doyel admitted that his behavior was wrong and apologized to Clark and her family for any offense caused.

Doyel’s efforts to make amends have been met with varying reactions from the public and the sports community. Despite his apologies, the fallout from the incident has resulted in his exclusion from covering the Indiana Fever this season.

As the WNBA season approaches, the Indiana Fever, with Caitlin Clark as a key addition, are anticipated to be one of the most watched teams in the league. The absence of Doyel from the reporting scene adds an additional layer of interest to the upcoming season.
