House Republicans’ Plan to Protect Trump from Prosecution Is Dead on Arrival
House Republican MAGAs recently proposed a plan to change the law and shield former President Trump from prosecution. However, this initiative has been swiftly dismissed and is already considered “dead in the water.”
According to a report by Politico, House Republican leaders have been quietly assessing support for a bill that would allow both current and former presidents to transfer state cases to federal courts. Nevertheless, the proposal lacks the necessary backing and faces significant opposition.
Rep. Russell Fry (R-S.C.) spearheaded the bill, but doubts linger about its viability. Three anonymous sources revealed that the legislation might struggle to pass the House and is unlikely to survive the Democrat-controlled Senate.
The House MAGAs are urging Speaker Mike Johnson to bring the bill to a vote, hoping to demonstrate solidarity with Trump. However, such a move could prove detrimental to Republicans, particularly the 19 House members from districts won by President Biden in 2020.
For these Republicans, supporting a measure to protect Trump could jeopardize their political future. By aligning themselves with MAGA policies, they risk alienating voters who supported Biden. Any vote in favor of shielding Trump would likely be exploited by their opponents in the upcoming 2024 election.
Ultimately, the proposal to safeguard Trump through legislative means appears doomed, even within the House Republican ranks.
