U.S. Bipartisan Bill Targets ByteDance Ownership of TikTok

The United States Congress passed a bipartisan bill on Wednesday aimed at compelling ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, to divest from the popular social media platform or face a complete ban in the nation. The bill garnered a 352 to 65 vote and now awaits consideration by the Senate and the signature of President Joe Biden to be enacted into law.

Congressional TikTok Dilemma

Interestingly, amid the passage of the bill, a scrutiny of the final vote count from the House revealed a peculiar situation. Several members of Congress who voted in favor of the ban on TikTok still maintain active accounts on the platform. Notably, at least three of these legislators have posted new content on TikTok within the past week. One such example is Representative Jackson, a prolific TikToker, who recently uploaded a video discussing the bill and justifying his vote. According to Jackson, he views the potential divestiture of ByteDance as a positive step that may prevent the platform from being banned in the long run. He expressed concerns about the Chinese government’s possible influence on the content viewed by users on TikTok.

While attempts were made to reach out to the aforementioned congressmen for comment, responses were not immediately received.

Varied Congressional Engagement

Furthermore, there were other instances where members of Congress who supported the ban had not posted on TikTok for an extended period. For instance, Representative Takano joined TikTok in 2019 but has not shared any new videos since 2020. Similarly, Representatives Houlahan and Wilson ceased posting content towards the end of 2022. The decision to support the ban may have been influenced by the U.S. government’s previous directive in December 2022, prohibiting TikTok usage on all federally owned mobile devices.

On the other hand, Representative Bennie Thompson, a Democrat from Mississippi, voted for the ban despite never having posted a video on his TikTok account. Notably, all the politicians mentioned in this context are affiliated with the Democratic party, a trend that may suggest an effort to appeal to younger demographics.

Critics and Advocates of the Bill

The political spectrum’s response to the bill varied, with some Republicans contending that the ban could infringe on free speech rights. In particular, Senator Rand Paul from Kentucky criticized the ban proposal, drawing parallels to authoritarian regimes that impose similar restrictions. Conversely, Democrats such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez raised concerns about the bill’s expeditious development and its potential implications for privacy and national security. Ocasio-Cortez emphasized the need for a transparent public discourse on antitrust, privacy, and national security concerns related to TikTok.

Despite diverging opinions, the bill secured bipartisan backing in the House of Representatives, showcasing unity across party lines. Even former President Donald Trump, who previously endorsed a ban on TikTok through an Executive Order, reversed his stance, aligning with the bipartisan support for the legislation.

Ultimately, the juxtaposition between congressional votes and TikTok activity underscores the complexities of navigating regulatory decisions in the digital age. As TikTok continues to permeate American culture with its vast user base, the nature of political engagements on the platform reflects evolving paradigms in modern governance and public representation.
