The BitBoy One: A Game Boy-Inspired Bitcoin Hardware Wallet

While plans for a Game Boy cartridge that transformed the classic handheld into a Bitcoin cold wallet were abandoned last year, a new project has emerged that combines Bitcoin gaming, play-to-earn rewards, and hardware wallet functionality into a single portable device.

The BitBoy One, unveiled by Ordz Games, is a Bitcoin-centric gaming handheld that bears a striking resemblance to Nintendo’s iconic Game Boy. However, it features a vibrant see-through orange shell that exudes a Bitcoin aesthetic.

Reminiscent of third-party gaming handhelds from brands like Anbernic, the BitBoy One is powered by a RockChip RK3566 processor and boasts a 3.45-inch 640×480 screen, 32GB of internal memory, a 256GB TF storage card, 4GB of RAM, and a 3,500 mAh battery that can last up to six hours on a full charge.

Gaming and Rewards

Unlike traditional gaming devices, the BitBoy One is not limited to playing retro games. It will support Bitcoin-based games developed by Ordz Games, offering players the opportunity to earn rewards through gameplay. These rewards are expected to be in the form of Bitcoin BRC-20 or Runes token, or potentially unique NFT-like Bitcoin Ordinals inscriptions.

Moreover, the BitBoy One doubles as a Bitcoin hardware wallet, enabling users to manage their assets directly from the device using wallet apps such as Xverse and Unisat. Additionally, users may have the ability to mine tokens through decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePINs) by simply keeping the device operational.

While the BitBoy One is not capable of mining Bitcoin itself, the device can run emulators that allow users to play digital copies of classic games from consoles like the original Sony PlayStation and earlier gaming systems.

Pricing and Availability

According to Ordz Games, the BitBoy One is targeted to be priced around $500 and will be available for pre-order later this month, with a planned release later this year. The company intends to showcase the device at the Web3 Gaming Expo in Hong Kong and Paris Blockchain Week in the coming days to generate interest among potential buyers.

In addition to the physical device, purchasers will receive a digital version of the handheld inscribed on the Bitcoin blockchain via an Ordinals inscription. This digital edition will also support gameplay through the Ordz website.

Recently, Ordz Games unveiled the first Ordinals inscription for the BitBoy One, which was lauded as the sixth-largest inscription ever on the Bitcoin blockchain at 3.93MB. The 3D rendering of the inscription can be interactively explored from various angles.

The convergence of gaming, cryptocurrency, and hardware innovation in the form of the BitBoy One marks a significant step forward in the intersection of entertainment and finance, offering users a unique and multifaceted experience that bridges the worlds of gaming and blockchain technology.
