J.D. Martinez Signs One-Year Contract with New York Mets
Six-time All-Star J.D. Martinez has recently reached an agreement with the New York Mets on a one-year contract valued at $12 million, as revealed by a report from the New York Post’s John Heyman.
Martinez entered the free-agent market for the second consecutive off-season subsequent to finalizing a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers in December 2022. During his time on the West Coast, the 35-year-old experienced a resurgence, achieving a batting line of .271/.321/.572 with 33 home runs and 103 RBIs across 113 games. Additionally, Martinez received the honor of being selected to the All-Star Game for the third year in a row.
His designated hitter position with the Dodgers will now be filled by Shohei Ohtani, who recently agreed to an unprecedented 10-year, $700 million deal with the team. Martinez, primarily a designated hitter at this stage of his career, has only had 12 innings of play in a defensive capacity since 2021.
Bringing 13 seasons of MLB experience to the table, Martinez has played for various teams including the Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks, Detroit Tigers, and Houston Astros. Among his achievements are three Silver Slugger awards, MVP votes on four separate occasions, and being part of Boston’s World Series championship team in 2018. Throughout his career spanning 1522 games, he boasts a .287/.350/.524 slash line and has amassed 366 doubles and 315 home runs.
Notably, Martinez has a strong track record in postseason play, participating in 33 playoff games and smashing 10 home runs in 119 at-bats.
