Bluesky Confirms Jack Dorsey’s Departure
Bluesky officially confirmed Jack Dorsey’s departure from the decentralized social media company’s board of directors on Sunday. Dorsey, the founder of Twitter, announced his exit from Bluesky over the weekend with a simple “no” response to a user’s question. This move comes as a surprise to many, considering Dorsey’s integral role in creating the platform.
In a statement released on social media, Bluesky expressed its gratitude to Dorsey for his support in funding and launching the Bluesky project. The company is now on the lookout for a new board member who shares its vision of empowering users to control their social networking experiences.
Bluesky’s Journey and Current Status
Dorsey initially introduced the Bluesky project on Twitter back in 2019, describing it as an open and decentralized standard for social media. While the platform was initially invite-only, it recently opened its doors to the public, garnering approximately four million users to date.
Despite the increasing user base, Dorsey’s departure has raised concerns about the platform’s future. The reasons behind his decision to leave the board remain undisclosed, leaving many to speculate on the implications for Bluesky moving forward.
Jack Dorsey’s Recent Activity
Over the weekend, Dorsey displayed an active presence on his old platform, X. He unfollowed over 2,000 accounts, retaining only Elon Musk, Edward Snowden, and Stella Assange in his following list. Additionally, Dorsey engaged in discussions about Kendrick and Drake’s rap feud, emphasizing the importance of independent technology in one of his tweets.
Recent reports from NBC News have shed light on federal prosecutors examining financial transactions at Block, another company co-founded by Dorsey. The investigations focus on potential compliance issues related to processing crypto transactions from sanctioned countries and terrorist groups. Block has emphasized its rigorous compliance program in response to these allegations.
Both Bluesky and Block have refrained from providing further comments on the matter following the news reports.
Dorsey’s Departures and Future Endeavors
Dorsey’s exit from Twitter’s board in 2022 signaled the end of an era for the social media giant he established. Despite expressing concerns about Elon Musk’s management approach at Twitter, Dorsey maintained confidence in the company’s new leadership at the time.
In late 2023, Dorsey went a step further by deleting his Bluesky account on Nostr, another decentralized social media platform. His actions imply a gradual distancing from Bluesky, hinting at potential shifts in his focus and priorities in the near future.
