Japan’s Moon Rover Concept Unveiled as Transforming Optimus Prime Toy
Japan’s innovative proposal for an advanced moon rover has recently come to light, showcasing a remarkable feature beyond initial expectations. Originally introduced last June and currently in the process of being distributed, a newly designed scale model of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s (JAXA) Lunar Cruiser not only impeccably replicates the intricate details of the astronaut transport developed in partnership with Toyota but also transforms into Optimus Prime, the iconic leader of the Autobots.
This Takara Tomy toy amalgamates the real agency’s concept with the popular Transformers franchise, known for the “robots in disguise” theme. Marketed as the “Takara Tomy Transformers Lunar Cruiser Optimus Prime action figure,” this product is available for pre-order at $75 on Hasbro’s Pulse website, the direct-to-fan online store of the renowned toy company. The figure faithfully emulates the appearance of the Lunar Cruiser pre-exhibited in 2019.
Revolutionizing Moon Exploration
Over the past five years, JAXA and Toyota have been driving research efforts towards a robust lunar vehicle to facilitate prolonged expeditions on the moon’s surface. Diverging from the traditional Apollo lunar rover and NASA’s upcoming lunar terrain vehicles for the Artemis program, the pressurized Lunar Cruiser, named after Toyota’s Land Cruiser, boasts functionality akin to a camper van, ideal for extended periods of stay.

In robot form, Optimus Prime stands at approximately 7 inches (18 centimeters) in height, predominantly constructed from ABS plastic.
Complementing this design is a solar panel accessory that transforms into a shield for Optimus Prime, offering versatility in functionality. The solar panel can be mounted externally on the rover or stored within by lifting the hatchback, aligning with JAXA and Toyota’s preliminary plans.
